Tigers Sweep Wooster; Win Back-to-Back NCAC Titles

Wooster, Ohio- The Tigers clinched their second straight North Coast Athletic Conference regular season title after sweeping Wooster Saturday afternoon in Wooster, Ohio. DePauw battled to win game one, 2-1, and took the nightcap, 8-4.

DePauw improved to 23-15 overall and 13-3 in the NCAC, while Wooster dropped to 12-27 on the year and 3-13 in NCAC play.

The Tigers struck first in game one, scoring a run in the second inning. Jennifer Ridge reached base on a bunt single to leadoff the frame and advanced to second on Lauren Krumwiede's ground out. Ridge stole third and scored thanks to a Wooster error on Julia Waggoner's ground ball to third.

Both teams failed to get any offense going in the middle innings as both starting pitchers cruised to the seventh inning. Up 1-0, DePauw added a key insurance run in the top of the seventh helped by another Fighting Scot error. Sammi Bell hit a one-out single and advanced to third on Taylor Golden's double to right. Gabby Smart lined out to right, but Bell was able to score, as the first basemen was unable to handle the throw from right.

Wooster mounted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh when Stephenie Little reached base on a two-out single. Pinch runner, Kasey Fiedler advanced to second on a Taylor Raybuck single to third. Skye Patterson singled to left field plating Fiedler, but Paige Goldberg lined out the left to end the game.

Kahla Nolan earned the complete game victory, scattering seven hits and striking out six. Georgia Hill took the loss for Wooster after pitching seven strong innings giving up two unearned runs.

In the nightcap, the Tigers piled on five runs in the top of the second to take control of the game. Ridge singled to start the inning and advanced to third when Wooster mishandled Beth Chelmowski's bunt. Chelmowski stole second and Hailey Freres bunt single plated Ridge. Freres would steal second and after a strikeout by Andi Sarkisian, Morgan Pigush reached on an error that scored Chelmoswki from second.

Following a Bell ground out Golden delivered a two-run double to center and Smart singled to drive in Golden and make the score 5-0. In total, the Tigers sent 11 batters to the plate in the frame.

Wooster answered in the bottom of the second with two runs on three hits. Patterson provided a run scoring single and Demi Hart's sacrifice fly to left made it 5-2.

Three errors would benefit DePauw in the third as they needed just one hit to tally two runs. Waggoner reached on an error and moved to second on a Sarkisian ground out. Pigusch walked and Bell followed with an RBI single down the right field line plating Waggoner, while Pigusch was able to come around on an error by the Scots' second baseman.

DePauw's offensive onslaught would continue in the fourth, as they added yet another insurance run. Chelmowski drew a one-out walk and promptly stole second, advancing to third on an errant throw. Sarkisian delivered a two-out single to center that scored Chelmowski and made the score 8-2.

The Fighting Scots would only score two runs for the remainder of the contest both coming in the fifth inning. Carly Schoenstein was hit by a pitch to start the frame and moved to second on a Little single. Raybuck singed to second to load the bases and Patterson followed with an RBI single to center. Linea Brouse drew a two-out bases loaded walk, forcing in pinch runner Kristyn Swanson from third.

Freres picked up the complete game victory giving up four runs on 11 hits, while Kate Edgehouse took the loss going just 2.1 innings, but surrendering just one earned run on six hits.

With the sweep, the Tigers have clinched back-to-back NCAC titles and will host the NCAC tournament starting Friday, May 2.

DePauw closes out regular season play tomorrow as they play host to Illinois Wesleyan starting at 1:00 p.m.
