Denison Ends Tigers' Three-Peat Hopes

Box Score

Greencastle, Ind.- The 19th-ranked Tigers were out to capture their third-straight North Coast Athletic Conference tournament title Wednesday afternoon when the hosted Denison. However, the Big Red's stout defense thwarted DePauw and Denison pulled off the 2-0 upset victory.

With the loss the Tigers dropped to 16-3 on the year, while the Big Red improved to 13-6 and advanced to play Kenyon in the NCAC championship on Saturday at Kenyon.

In the opening half, both teams struggled to find any offensive rhythm. The lone goal came from Denison's Britta Marden when she knocked in a shot from the baseline that trickled its way into the net. After gaining the lead, the Big Red stepped up their defensive attack and did not allow the Tigers to gain any momentum.

DePauw increased their offensive pressure in the second half as they outshot Denison 12-2. The Tigers best chance came around the 60th minute when they earned three-straight penalty corner opportunities, but were unable to tally a goal.

With just over seven minutes left, DePauw pulled their goalie in hopes of netting a late goal with the extra attacker. Even with the extra attacker the Denison defense proved too tough to crack.

Late in the contest the Big Red were rewarded a penalty stroke and Molly Chapman stepped up and rattled the cage with just two seconds remaining to seal the 2-0 victory.

The Tigers outshot Denison by a margin of 15-5 and held a 10-1 edge on penalty corners. Audrey Miller-Foreman made three saves in the shutout, while Sarah Guendert recorded one save in the loss.
