Late Score Lifts Ohio Wesleyan Past DePauw; Snaps Tigers' Three-Game Streak

Box Score

Greencastle, Ind. - Ohio Wesleyan's Kevin Herman scored on a 2-yard run with just 1:20 left and DePauw couldn't find the end zone in two tries from the Ohio Wesleyan 23 as time expired with the Battling Bishops taking a 23-16 North Coast Athletic Conference win over the Tigers on a cold, damp day on Mourouzis Field at Blackstock Stadium.

Ohio Wesleyan improved to 4-2 overall and 3-2 in the NCAC, while DePauw dropped to 4-2 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

DePauw earlier knotted the score at 16-16 as Amen Galley scored on a 2-yard run with 6:44 left which capped an eight-play, 75-yard series. Galley's 27-yard run two plays earlier helped set up the score. On the second play of the drive, Ohio Wesleyan's Zane Kieffer intercepted DePauw quarterback Matt Hunt, but the Bishops were called for a personal foul which kept the drive alive.

The Battling Bishops' game-winning series started on their own 27 and the guests converted a third-and-five with quarterback Dominick Orsini teaming with Adrian Bishop for a 31-yard gain to the DePauw 37. Ohio Wesleyan picked up a couple more first downs on the ground and were faced with a third-and-one from the DePauw 2 before Herman picked up the score.

Hunt completed four straight passes on the game's final drive to advance the ball to the Ohio Wesleyan 35. He then connected with Jake Hagan on fourth down for a 12-yard gain to the 23 with nine seconds left. The Tigers had two more chances, but both of Hunt's passes to Hagan in the left corner of the end zone fell incomplete.

The game's scoring started with Ohio Wesleyan's Miles MacKenzie booting a 50-yard field goal with 11:53 left in the first. The Tigers opened with a pair of three-and-out drives before MacKenzie missed from 47 yards.

The Tigers took over on their own 31 and, using a mix of run and pass, drove to the Bishops 10 before Marko Adams came on to kick a 29-yard field goal on the first play of the second quarter to even the score at 3-3.

Adams tacked on another 29-yarder with 2:35 left in the half, but the Bishops struck on a third-and-nine play on the next series. Orsini completed a pass to Shadoan down the left sideline and Shadoan cut back to the middle of the field and avoided DePauw defenders for a 74-yard score that gave Ohio Wesleyan a 10-9 advantage with 1:51 left in the half.

The Tigers responded as Hunt ran for 11 yards on first down and then completed three straight to Hagan totaling 41 yards to the Ohio Wesleyan 22. Two straight incomplete passes and an illegal touching penalty on third down forced the Tigers to attempt another field goal. This time Adams nailed a 39-yarder to cut the lead to 10-9 with just 56 seconds left in the half.

Ohio Wesleyan nearly scored at the end of the half as the Bishops managed to run 10 plays and drive 56 yards in the final minute before MacKenzie was wide left on a 41-yard attempt as time expired.

The teams exchanged a pair of punts each in the third before Ohio Wesleyan drove to the DePauw 11. MacKenzie missed on a 32-yard attempt after his team was whistled for a false start penalty on the previous play.

DePauw picked up a first down on the next series before Ohio Wesleyan's Deion Centeno picked off Hunt on third down at the DePauw 48 and returned it 17 yards to the 31.

On the next play Cheyne Lacanaria completed a pass to Shadoan who appeared to be headed to the end zone untouched, but after diving from the 2 Shadoan was whistled for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty which moved the ball back to the 17. After the DePauw defense shut the Bishops down, MacKenzie came on to kick a 42-yard field goal to extend the lead to 13-9 with just 1:06 left in the third.

DePauw drove into Ohio Wesleyan territory early in the fourth but was forced to punt. The Bishops' Herman ran for 65 yards on first down and MacKenzie later booted a 22-yard field to make it 16-9 with 11:18 left.

Ohio Wesleyan outgained the Tigers, 424-328 with DePauw holding a 22-20 edge in first downs.

Hunt completed 26 of 48 passes for 225 yards with 10 going to Hagan for 98 yards. Galley rushed for 79 yards on 21 tries.

Orsini completed 23 of 37 for 259 yards and rushed for 58. Shadoan totaled seven receptions for 145 yards, while Herman rushed for 92 on 17 carries.

Will Longthorne led the DePauw defense with 11 tackles, while Thomas Gray and Michael Mitsch each had one sack and Garrett Rice totaled two tackles for loss.

Chris Mondon paced Ohio Wesleyan with nine tackles including three for loss, while Gary Brodek had the team's lone sack.

DePauw takes to the road next Saturday for a 1 p.m. contest at Allegheny.
