16th-Ranked Tigers Fall in Penalty Shootout to Kenyon

Greencastle, Ind.- The 16th-ranked DePauw field hockey team looked to avenge their only loss of the season, hosting Kenyon Saturday afternoon at Reavis Stadium. Tied 3-3 after two overtime sessions, the Ladies converted on three shots to defeat the Tigers by a final score of 4-3.

With the loss, DePauw dropped to 10-2 overall and 6-2 in North Coast Athletic Conference play, while Kenyon improved to 12-2 on the year and 8-1 in the NCAC.

Grace Goodbarn put the Tigers in front on an assist from Paige Berliner in the 7th minute. Maggie Campbell extended DePauw's lead when she rattled the cage on an assist from Berliner in the 17th minute.

Kenyon's Rachel Hall would cut the Tiger lead in half when she scored on an assist from Sammy Johnston in the 28th minute.

Trailing 2-1 at halftime, the Ladies came out and scored two goals to open the second session. Cecilia Depman tied the game on an assist from Shannon Hart in the 40th minute and Julie Freedman put Kenyon in front on an assist by Maddie Breschi in the 48th minute.

With just under three minutes remaining, DePauw's Paige Henry was awarded a penalty stroke and converted to tie the contest with just 2:59 left in regulation.

In the first overtime period, Kenyon fired four shots on goal, but were unable to find the back of the cage. The Tigers had a chance to win it when Henry was awarded another penalty stroke with four minutes left. Henry's shot was saved and the contest remained tied.

After a second scoreless overtime stanza, the contest headed to a penalty shootout. Kenyon converted on their first two penalty strokes as Breschi and Hall led the way. DePauw battled back and tied the score as Grace Fisher and Campbell were successful on their attempts. Freedman put the Ladies in front and Sarah Speroff made the game-clinching save on Goodbarn's attempt.

Speroff made 17 saves in the victory, while Sarah Guendert had six saves in defeat. The Tigers held a 27-20 advantage on shots and had 13 penalty corners to Kenyon's 12.

DePauw faces another tough challenge when they host Denison tomorrow starting at noon, at Reavis Stadium.
