Tigers Sweep Spartans in Final Tuneup before NCAC Tournament

N. Manchester, Ind. - In its final tuneup before the North Coast Athletic Conference, DePauw improved to 21-15 with a doubleheader sweep at Manchester by scores of 7-3 and 5-2. The host Spartans dropped to 19-15.

Manchester took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one as Kayla Yates doubled with one out and scored on Emily Willma's grounder.

In the fourth, DePauw knotted the score as Linsey Button reached on a fielder's choice and came home on Sammi Bell's double.

The Tigers took the lead in the sixth when Amy Hallet and Button each walked to start the inning and moved up one base on Bell's sacrifice bunt. Hallett then scored on a wild pitch and Button came home when Catherine Conte reached on an error.

Kylie Planck's two-run single in the bottom of the sixth knotted the score at 3-3, but the Tigers scored four times in the seventh. Lauren Krumwiede and Samantha Szyska each singled with two outs before Hallett knocked in Krumwiede with a single to center. Button followed with a two-run double and scored on Bell's two-bagger.

Kahla Nolan, who relieved Emily Bichler and recorded the final two outs of the sixth, retired the side in order in the seventh.

DePauw totaled nine hits with Krumwiede, Bell and  Hailey Freres each totaling two. Planck had three of the Spartans' seven.

Nolan improved to 8-5, while Brittney Wetzel dropped to 0-2.

Hallett's solo homer in the first inning of the nightcap gave DePauw a 1-0 lead before Button reached on an error and went to third on Conte's single. Conte stole second and Button scored on a wild pitch before Freres singled home Conte.

Bell's second-inning double drove in Morgan Pigusch and Bell rounded out the DePauw scoring in the fifth with a leadoff homer.

Yates drove in Kaitlyn Schmidt in the fifth to put Manchester on the board and Willma scored in the sixth when Shannon Stephan reached on an error.

Bell had two of DePauw's six hits, while Yates had two of the Spartans four.

Nolan improved to 9-5 with Freres picking up her first save. Ashley Nash dropped to 8-9.

DePauw hosts the North Coast Athletic Conference starting Friday. The Tigers face Allegheny in the opening game at Noon..
