Tigers Sweep Allegheny; Clinch NCAC Title Share

Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw picked up a pair of one-run wins in sweeping visiting Allegheny by 3-2 and 6-5 scores as the Tigers clinched at least a share of the North Coast Athletic Conference softball championship.

DePauw improved to 18-14 overall an 12-2 in the NCAC, while the Gators dropped to 15-16 overall and 7-5 in the NCAC.

In game one, the Gators left five runners stranded over the opening two frames and DePauw was without a base runner for the first three innings.

DePauw struck first in the fourth as Amy Hallett hit a one-out homer to left. Haleigh Chasteen followed with a single and pinch-runner Lauren Krumwiede moved to third on Linsey Button's base hit. Krumwiede scored when Button stole second.

The Gators evened the score in the fifth when Sadie Stuart reached by being hit by a pitch with two outs and scored on Stephanie Fort's double. Halea Hayden followed with a two-bagger that plated Fort.

DePauw's winning run crossed home in the fifth as Samantha Szyska singled with two outs and moved to second on an error on the play. After Jennifer Ridge walked. Hallett knocked in Szyska with a base hit to left.

Hallett had two of DePauw's seven hits, while four different Gators had one hit each.

Kahla Nolan improved to 6-4 with 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of Emily Bichler, while Caitlin Nealer dropped to 12-12.

Allegheny took a 1-0 lead in the nightcap as Katrina George's first-inning single scored Fort, but DePauw evened the score in the bottom of the second when Button walked and pinch-runner Gwen Anderson advanced to second on a wild pitch. Sammi Bell's sacrifice bunt moved Anderson to third before Catherine Conte singled her home.

George's line drive, two-run homer to center in the third gave Allegheny a 3-1 lead, but DePauw scored unearned single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to knot the score.

Button led off the fourth with a double, moved to third on Conte's single and scored when the Gators dropped the throw to second as Conte stole the base. Szyska led off the fifth with a single and moved to third on Hallett's single. Szyska scored when Hallett broke for second and the Gators, again, couldn't handle the throw to second.

The teams were scoreless in the sixth and seventh before Nealer doubled with one out in the eighth and Nicole Rodi nailed a two-run homer to right center.

DePauw evened the score in the bottom of the eighth as Chasteen and Button singled before Bell moved each with a sacrifice bunt and Conte delivered a single to center which scored both.

Szyska singled to start the eighth. With Szyska running on the 2-2 pitch to Chasteen, the Gators' shortstop moved towards second and Chasteen drove a single through the hole on the left side. Szyska made it to third, but the throw from the outfield got past third allowing her to score the winning run.

Conte had three of DePauw's 12 hits, while Hallett, Chasteen, Button and Szyska added two each. Hallett's third-inning double was the 49th of her career breaking the record held by Jen Kosinski.

Fort, George and Nealer each had two of Allegheny's eight hits.

Nolan moved to 7-4 with the win in relief of Bichler and struck out five. Nealer slipped to 12-13.

DePauw returns to play on Wednesday, April 24, with a non-conference doubleheader at Manchester. .
