DePauw Drops Doubleheader at Wittenberg for First NCAC Losses of Season

Springfield, Ohio - DePauw totaled just four hits in each game of its North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader at Wittenberg and suffered its first conference losses of the season by 2-1 and 4-1 scores.

The visiting Tigers dropped to 16-14 overall and 10-2 in the NCAC and their 12-game win streak came to an end. Wittenberg improved to 16-7 overall and 7-5 in conference play.

In game one, Wittenberg took a 1-0 lead in the opening frame as Loren Combs led off with a single to left and advanced to second on an error. Combs stole third and came home when Laura Rose delivered a single through the left side.

The hosts made it 2-0 in the fourth as Aubrey Mendez singled and advanced to second on Shelby Knapp's sacrifice bunt. Kaela Hughes singled Mendez to third before Shannon Lance made it 2-0 with a two-out single up the middle.

DePauw's run came in the sixth when Jamie Story led off with a single down the left field line. Megan Landahl entered as a pinch-runner and moved to second on Samanatha Szyska's sacrifice bunt. Amy Hallett then drove in Landahl with a double to left center.

DePauw totaled just four hits with Hallett leading the way with a pair. Hughes had three of Wittenberg's nine hits.

Emily Bichler dropped to 6-5 on the season for DePauw, while Rachel Ross improved to 10-4 after allowing just four hit with three strikeouts and no walks.

Wittenberg again scored first in the nightcap as Rose drove in a pair with a two-out single which came after DePauw threw out a runner at the plate.

The hosts added two more in the fourth on Knapp's single and Hughes' double. All nine of Wittenberg's hits came in those two innings.

DePauw's lone run was in the sixth when Megan Landahl led off with a single and moved to second on Hallett's grounder to third. Landahl advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Haleigh Chasteen's sacrifice fly.

Four different Tigers had one hit apiece, while Hughes and Lance each had two of Wittenberg's nine hits.

Ross again went the distance for Wittenberg to improve to 11-4. Kahla Nolan dropped to 5-4 with the loss.

DePauw returns to action on Saturday, April 20, when it hosts Allegheny in a 1 p.m. NCAC doubleheader.
