#8 Tigers Hand Top-Ranked Emory First Loss; Second Game Ends in Tie

March 24, 2011, Atlanta, Ga. — Eighth-ranked DePauw scored two runs in the top of the seventh and defeated top-ranked and previously unbeaten Emory, 7-6, in game one of the doubleheader. The teams finished in a 9-9 tie on the second game which was suspended due to darkness after 10 innings. DePauw is now 10-2-1, while Emory is 26-1-1.

In the opener, Jen Kosinski gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead with a two-run homer in the first before Rachel MacBeth's single in the second scored Cymone Allen

Emory countered in the second as Jennifer Haag's double scored Megan Light and Lauren Gorodetsky's single plated Ellyn Kocoloski.

The Eagles took a 5-3 lead in the third as Dana Goodenough singled with two outs and scored on Light's double. Jessica Thomas doubled home Light and Jessica Boni's single brought home Thomas.

DePauw evened the score at 5-5 in the fifth as Amy Hallett doubled home Emma Minx and Haley Buchanan. Emory pinch-hitter Sophia Tarte singled in the fifth allowing pinch-runner Ally Kersthold to score from second.

Buchanan singled with one out in the seventh and Samantha Szyska came in as a pinch-runner. Hallett and Holly Paris followed with singles to load the bases. Jamie Story lifted a sacrifice fly to right which scored Szyska and allowed the other two runners to advance. Pinch-hitter Lucy Cohen followed with a single which scored Hallett.

DePauw totaled 15 hits in the win as Hallett had three. MacBeth, Minx and Buchanan each added two. Emory finished with nine hits as nine different players had one each. Emily Bichler improved to 10-2, while Bridget Holloway dropped to 14-1.

In the nightcap, Light gave Emory a 2-0 lead in the first with a two-run single before the Tigers added one in the second on MacBeth's run-scoring single. Claire Bailey's single in the second scored Meaghan Schultz and gave Emory a 3-1 advantage.

Buchanan cut the lead to 3-2 in the third with a sacrifice fly which scored Jen Kosinski. DePauw took it s first lead of the game in the fourth when MacBeth singled home pinch-runner Kate Hendrickson and Allen came home on a bad throw as MacBeth stole second to give the Tigers a 4-3 lead.

The Eagles regained the lead in the fifth on RBI doubles from Thomas and Tarte, but DePauw scored four in the sixth to take an 8-5 lead. Brianne Weeks singled home Story and Kosinski followed with a three-run homer.

Light's single in the bottom of the sixth scored Goodenough and Thomas' double brought home Brittany Boeshore and pinch-runner Kersthold to tie the contest at 8-8.

In the 10th, Szyska ran for Buchanan and was placed on second as the tiebreaker rule was invoked. Hallett's sacrifice bunt moved her to third and Paris' sacrifice fly to right scored Szyska and gave DePauw a 9-8 lead. In the bottom of the 10th, Goodenough was placed on second, moved to third on Boeshore's sacrifice bunt and later scored on Boni's base hit.

DePauw totaled nine hits as Kosinski and MacBeth had three each and Weeks followed with two. Emory finished with 17 hits paced by Boeshore, Light and Boni with three each. Bailey, Thomas and Kokoloski each had two.

The Tigers travel to Sewanee for a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader tomorrow at 2 p.m. CDT.
