February 18, 2011, Birmingham, Ala. — Host Birmingham-Southern jumped out to an 18-4 lead and DePauw got no closer than five as the Panthers topped the Tigers, 71-63 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest.
DePauw dropped to 16-8 overall and 11-4 in the SCAC as its six-game win streak came to an end, while Birmingham-Southern improved to 20-3 overall and 13-2 in the conference.
The Panthers scored 13 straight early to lead, 18-4, with 12:46 left in the first half, but DePauw scored nine consecutive to pull to within 18-13 with 9:23 remaining in the half. Birmingham-Southern led at the break 36-25.
The hosts extended the advantage to 14 early in the second half before the Tigers went on a 13-5 run to trim the lead to 46-40 with 9:42 left. Birmingham-Southern scored the next five and the Tigers never got closer than seven the rest of the way.
Drew Wills led DePauw with 17 points, while Ryan Sever added 15 and Sean Haseley followed with 12. Sever matched a career-high with 11 rebounds for a double-double.
Jasen Jonus paced the Panthers with 17 points followed by Kevin Kegarise with 15, Zac Richards with 12 and Patrick Price with 10. Messenger hauled down five rebounds.
DePauw shot 47.8 percent from the floor, while the Panthers connected on 52.4 percent and hit 7-of-15 from three-point range. The Tigers held a 28-25 edge on the boards.
The Tigers travel to Rhodes on Sunday for a 2 p.m. CST contest.
