Tigers Fall to Centre in SCAC Men's Title Game

February 28, 2010, Jackson, Miss. —  DePauw's bid for its third Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball title came to an end this afternoon in a 60-56 loss to Centre in the conference championship game at Millsaps College.

Centre held a 58-53 lead with less than a minute to play before Sean Haseley was fouled while attempting a three-pointer with 35 seconds left. He hit all three free throws to close the margin to two. The Colonels' Josh Crawford hit two free throws with 30 seconds remaining, but the Tigers missed three straight threes and an inside shot before time expired.

The Colonels shot nearly 55 percent from the floor in the first half, but DePauw hit 6-of-10 threes and the Tigers went to the break with a 32-31 lead. In a second half which included four ties and nine lead changes, Centre took a four-point lead before Ross Simpson and Ryan Sever knocked down threes to put DePauw ahead by two.

Drew Wills hit a bucket to lift the Tigers to a 49-48 lead, but Crawford countered with a couple of field goals and Centre led the rest of the way.

Wills led the Tigers with 12 points, while Haseley added 11. Tom Callen paced DePauw with seven rebounds as the Tigers held a 32-29 edge on the boards and grabbed 14 on the offensive glass.

Jeff Mullaney led Centre with 19 followed by Noll with 13 and Crawford and Bryon Ellis with 13 each. Alex Lloyd grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked three shots.

The Tigers committed just two turnovers, but shot just 35.1 percent for the game, while Centre hit 50 percent and had just six turnovers.

Willis was the lone player named to the all-tournament team.

DePauw finished the season with a 20-8 record, while Centre improved to 18-8.
