DePauw Wraps up Spring Trip with Split at Mississippi College

March 28, 2009, Clinton, Miss. —  DePauw wrapped up its Spring Break trip with a doubleheader split at Mississippi College as the Tigers lost the first game, 5-2, and took the nightcap by a 4-1 score. The Tigers, ranked seventh by Division III Softball-The Newsletter and 16th in the NFCA poll, are 13-6 on the season, while the Choctaws are now 10-9.

In the opener, the Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the second as Rachel Gill led off with a single and moved to second on Jennifer Kosinski's sacrifice bunt. She advanced to third on Ashlee Anton's groundout and scored on Kelly Schwerzler's single.

The Choctaws took the lead for good in the fourth as Rachel Hurley led off with a single, moved to second on Lauren Goolsby's sacrifice bunt and to third when Kasey Bomar reached on a Tigers error. Jennifer Jones drove in Hurley with a single, while Morgan Harpole drove in a pair with a double and scored when Lauren Coleman followed with a two-bagger.

They added an insurance run in the sixth as Morgan Gillenwat led off with a double and K McCullouch pinch ran for her. McCullouch moved to third on Kathleen Pulliam's grounder and scored on Reagan Jackson's groundout. The Tigers added a score in the seventh as Schwerzler drew a two-out walk, moved to second when Carolyn Barlett was hit by a pitch and scored on Rachel MacBeth's single.

MacBeth led the Tigers with two of their five hits, while Gillenwater and Hurley each had two of Mississippi College's eight hits. Megan Soultz dropped to 12-6 with the loss, while Whitney Warner improved to 7-2.

Kosinski put DePauw on the board in the second game with a solo homer in the second. The Tigers scored three in the third as Emma Minx and Kosinski reached on walks and scored on Anton's three-run homer. The Choctaws' lone run came in the sixth as Coleman doubled and later scored on Hurley's double.

Chelsy Patterson and Schwerzler each collected two of DePauw's eight hits, while Hurley had two of Mississippi College's six. Soultz improved to 13-6, whle Nicole Lathier dropped to 0-4.

The Tigers are scheduled to play a doubleheader at 18th-ranked Illinois Wesleyan on Tuesday.
