Tigers Drop Twinbill at Third-ranked Texas-Tyler

March 23, 2009, Tyler, Texas —  DePauw, ranked 16th in the coaches' poll and fourth by Division III Softball-The Newsletter,dropped a doubleheader at third-ranked University of Texas-Tyler by scores of 3-1 and 8-4. The Tigers dropped to 10-4, while the Patriots improved to 19-1.

DePauw starter Megan Soultz held the Patriots without a hit for the first 4 1/3 innings before they loaded the bases in the fifth without scoring.

Whitney Wyly and Ashley Klores hit consecutive doubles to start the sixth before Stacy Dominique drove in Klores with a two-out, two-run homer. The Tigers' lone run came in the seventh as Rachel Gill led off with a walk and advanced to second and third on passed balls. Jennifer Kosinksi walked before Ashlee Anton drove in Gill with a fielder's choice.

DePauw totaled three hits as Gill, Kosinski and Anton each had one. Four different Patriots had one hit apiece. Soultz dropped to 10-3, while Texas-Tyler starter Kelsey Ainsworth improved to 8-1 and Jessie Bross picked up her second save.

The Patriots jumped on the scoreboard in the first inning of the nightcap as Megan Richardson led off with a single, moved to second on Megan Hutson's sacrifice bunt and scored on Wyly's single. Kate Bell later drove in Wyly with a single.

Kelly Schwerzler led off the third with a single and advanced to second after Carolyn Bartlett reached on a fielder's choice from a throwing error at second. Rachel MacBeth singled in Schwerzler and Brianne Weeks later tied the game with a sacrifice fly which scored Bartlett.

Brittanni Hanna drew a two-out walk in the bottom of the third and Dominique followed with a triple. Amanda Busby was hit by a pitch and stole second before Sara DeStefano singled and drove in two. DeStefano went to second on the throw and scored on Richardson's base hit to make it 6-2

Texas-Tyler made it 8-2 in the fourth as Klores tripled with one out and Bell followed with a walk. Hanna's sacrifice fly scored Klores and Dominique's double brought home pinch-runner Sarah Isenberger.

DePauw scored a single run in the fifth as Gill singled home Week who reached base with a double and added one more in the sixth when MacBeth singled scoring pinch-runner Cymone Allen.

The Tigers totaled 10 hits with Gill, Kosinski and MacBeth each finishing with two. The Patriots had 12 hits as Richardson and Dominique totaled three each with Klores and DeStefano totaling two each.

Soultz dropped to 10-4 with the loss, while Kelsey Harrington improved to 5-0 with the win.

DePauw returns to action on Thursday at second-ranked Louisiana College.
