Box Score 2 March 14, 2009, Salisbury, Md. — The seventh-ranked Tigers moved to 5-1 on the season after splitting their two games at the Salisbury University Sea Gull Invitational.
DePauw lost to Lynchburg in the first game by a 3-1 count before defeating 13th-ranked Christopher Newport, 11-1, in the second game. Lynchburg improved to 9-4, while Christopher Newport dropped to 14-2.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after Chelsy Patterson and Brianne Weeks singled and advanced one base on Emma Minx's sacrifice bunt. Rachel Gill drove in Patterson with a groundout.
DePauw pitcher Megan Soultz retired the first nine batters she faced before Brittany Allsop led off the fourth with a double followed by Audra Della Rosa's single. Katie Bruce reached on a single and an error which plated Allsop and Della Rosa. Bruce scored when Amber James reached on an error.
The Tigers had several scoring opportunities, leaving nine on base. Weeks paced DePauw with three hits, while Patterson had a pair. allsop and Della Rosa each had two of Lynchburg's five hits. Soultz suffered her first loss after allowing just five hits with six strikeouts and no walks in six innings. Barbara Miles picked up the win despite allowing nine hits and walking three.
In the nightcap, the Tigers sent 13 batters to the plate in the second and scored nine times on the way to the five-inning win. Patterson, Jennifer Kosinski, Gill an Kelly Schwerzler each had two hits, while Schwerzler drove in three and Gill finished with two RBI and two runs scored. Kristin Nickloy led Christopher Newport with two of its four hits.
Soultz improved to 5-1 after allowing just four hits with four strikeouts in five innings. Lindsay Kelly sufferered the loss for the Captains.
The Tigers face Salisbury on Sunday at 10 a.m. and Plattsburgh State at Noon.
