25th-ranked Tigers Improve to 16-5 with Win over Panthers

Moore_Michael_200809mbb.jpgFebruary 6, 2009, Birmingham, Ala. — Birmingham-Southern scored the game's first four points, but visiting DePauw scored the next 21 and never trailed the rest of the way in a 75-61 victory at the Bill Battle Coliseum. The 25th-ranked Tigers improved to 16-5 with the win, while the Panthers dropped to 10-10.

Six different Tigers scored over a six-minute stretch as DePauw took a 21-4 lead with just under 13 minutes left in the first half. The Panthers closed the gap to eight on a couple of occasions before DePauw went to the break with a 38-28 advantage.

The Tigers extended the lead to as many as 17 at 50-33 on a pair of David Gray free throws with 13:42 remaining. DePauw held Birmingham-Southern without a field goal for a seven-minute stretch, but the Panthers hit 11-of-14 free throws to close the margin to 56-47 at the 7:47 mark.

After the Tigers pushed the margin to 13, Birmingham-Southern scored four straight to make it 64-55 with just over four minutes left.  Tony James hit a jumper and Mike Moore (pictured) scored a layup off a steal to seal the win.

Moore led all scorers with 29, while Tom Callen added 15 and Joe Bergfeld followed with 10. Gray hauled down five rebounds and James had four steals. With his 29 points, Moore moved into ninth place on DePauw's all-time scoring list with 1,396.

Aaron Parr paced the Panthers with 13 and Mark Messenger chipped in 12. Roger Williams led Birmingham-Southern with seven boards as the Panthers held a 26-20 edge on the boards.

DePauw shot a season-high 64 percent from the floor including 68 percent in the opening half, while the Panthers connected on 44 percent from the field. The Tigers also knocked in 10-of-15 three-pointers to Birmingham-Southern's 1-of-11 from beyond the arc.

The Tigers travel to Rhodes on Sunday for a Noon CST Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference game against the Lynx.
