Box Score October 4, 2009, Greencastle, Ind. — The Tigers outscored visiting Rhodes, 3-2, in penalty strokes and claimed a 2-1 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference victory over the Lynx. DePauw improved to 7-4 overall and 3-1 in the conference, while Rhodes dropped to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the conference.
Lindsey Gurkovich scored just 56 seconds into the contest on Libby Jones' assist. Kimberly Trainor knotted the score at 1-1 at 21:05 on Sarah Riffle's assist.
Both teams had several scoring opportunities late in regulation and into the overtime. DePauw was awarded a penalty stroke with 2:31 remaining in regulation, but Rhodes goalie Meghan Cullen got a glove on the shot headed for the top of the goal.
In the penalty stroke session, each team scored twice before Katie Sowar put the Tigers ahead 3-2 with a shot in the upper right corner of the cage on DePauw's fourth stroke. Rhodes couldnt' convert on its fifth stroke as DePauw goalie Liz Attewell made the stop giving the Tigers the win.
DePauw outshot Rhodes, 27-16 and held a 14-9 edge in penalty corners. Attewell totaled 12 saves, while Cullen had 11.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, October 10, at Centre. The Colonels join Rhodes and DePauw atop the SCAC standings with 3-1 marks.
