February 23, 2007, Greencastle, Ind. - The 22nd-ranked and top-seeded Tigers improved to 22-4 and advanced to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference semifinals following an 84-72 win over Sewanee in the day's third quarterfinal game. DePauw faces Trinity in Saturday's 7 p.m. semfinal game after Trinity defeated Oglethorpe, 50-49, in the final quarterfinal contest. Sewanee finished the season at 6-19.
The teams battled through a tight first half before DePauw broke free from a 21-21 tie with three-pointers from Austin Brown and Tony James, a layup from Matt McDonald and Ryan Werntz's three. Werntz and Brown each hit threes in the final two minutes to push DePauw's halftime lead to 42-26.
DePauw extended the lead to as many as 20 early in the second half and still held a 54-36 margin before Sewanee outscored the Tigers 10-0 over a three-minute stretch to close to within eight. DePauw added a 6-0 run to extend the margin back to 14.
Brown led DePauw with 21 followed by Stephen Schott and Werntz with 12 each. McDonald followed with 10 and a game-high eight rebounds. Mike Morre added eight assists in the victory.
Spencer Rowland paced Sewanee with 25 points, while Ben Pursell and Joey Garcia each added 13. Pursell and Rowland each grabbed seven rebounds and Chris Eddy dished out six assists.
