February 18, 2007, Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw placed six players in double figures and clinched the top seed in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament following a 90-71 win over Oglethorpe.
The Tigers improved to 21-4 overall with the win and finished SCAC regular season play at 12-2. The win also was DePauw's 16th straight at the Neal Fieldhouse as they went 12-0 at home for the team's first undefeated home campaign since the 1987-88 season. The Stormy Petrels dropped to 14-11 overall and 7-7 in the SCAC.
DePauw jumped out to a 15-5 lead early with a 10-0 run, but Oglethorpe battled back to tie the game at 26-26 and eventually take the lead. The Stormy Petrels held a 36-35 advantage after Andrew Tulowitsky hit a three with 1:10 left, but Austin Brown's free throw and back-to-back three-pointers from Reid Sakel lifted the Tigers to a 42-36 halftime lead.
The Stormy Petrels closed the gap to 50-47 with a 7-0 stretch, but the Tigers gradually pushed the margin back to double-digits at 64-52 on Tony James' three with just under 10 minutes left.
Sakel paced the Tigers with 14 followed by Mike Moore with 12 and Matt McDonald with 11. Ryan Werntz, Brian Oilar and Stephen Schott each added 10 in the win. McDonald snagged a team-high eight rebounds and Moore completed his second straight double-double with 11 assists.
Eric Dickinson led the Stormy Petrels with 16 points, while Ahmad Kareem Shaheed scored 14 and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. Tulowitsky and Terry Bailey each added 11 in the loss.
DePauw shot 50 percent for the game and knocked down 13 of 29 three-pointers, while Oglethorpe shot 51 percent from the field and hit 8 of 18 threes. DePauw held a 35-29 edge on the boards and grabbed 12 on the offensive glass.
The Tigers face Sewanee in the opening round of the SCAC tournament on Friday, February 23, at 6 p.m. CST while Oglethorpe takes on Trinity at 8 p.m. CST. All men's first-round games take place at Memphis University School with the semifinals and final at Rhodes College.
