Slow start sends Tigers to SCAC loss

January 5, 2007, Sewanee, Tenn. - Host Sewanee scored the game's first 13 points and trailed just once in a 77-70 win over DePauw. The Tigers dropped to 9-3 overall and 1-1 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, while Sewanee improved to 2-7 overall and 2-0 in the SCAC.

The hosts scored 13 points in the opening 2:23, but DePauw battled back to close the first half gap to three before trailing 43-39 at the intermission.

Sewanee extended the lead to 10 early in the second half before DePauw went on an 11-2 run to close to within one at 59-58. Brian Oilar's three-pointer with 6:30 remaining capped a 5-0 and gave the Tigers their only lead of the game at 64-63.

DePauw still trailed by just three with less than a minute to play, but Sewanee hit four free throws in the final 42 seconds and secured the win.

Austin Brown paced the Tigers with 21 points, while Stephen Schott added 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Tony James led DePauw with eight assists.

Joey Garcia led Sewanee with 22, while Spencer Rowland added 19 and Chris Eddy followed with 12. Garcia paced the hosts with six rebounds and Eddy dished out eight assists.

Sewanee shot 51.7 percent from the field, while DePauw connected on 44.4 percent. Sewanee also held a 35-31 advantage on the boards.

DePauw travels to Oglethorpe on Sunday for a 1 p.m. contest.LISTEN LIVE.
