September 30, 2006, Chicago, Ill. - DePauw scored on its first two possessions of each half and its defense limited the 10th-ranked offense in Division III to just 212 yards in a 31-6 win at the University of Chicago. DePauw improved to 3-1 with the win, while the Maroons dropped to 2-2.

The Tigers opened the game with a 10-play, 57-yard drive capped by Tyler Mallory's 35-yard field goal with 9:28 left in the first. On the ensuing kickoff, Colin Batko forced Chicago's returner into a fumble that Ryan McElwain recovered at the Maroons' 15-yard line. Following a Jeremiah Marks 14-yard run, quarterback Spud Dick scored on a 1-yard keeper to make it 10-0 with 8:34 left in the quarter.

On its first drive, Chicago drove to the DePauw 8 but Nick Schey was tackled for a 5-yard loss on first down and Schey's reception on second down also went for a 5-yard loss after Luis Davila tackled him behind the line of scrimmage. Dustin Hertel's 11-yard sack pushed the Maroons back to the 29 and they failed to score on the four-and-goal play.

Early in the second quarter, Chicago drove to the DePauw 13 and called upon Ryan Verissimo for a 30-yard field goal attempt, but DePauw's Hertel blocked it and gave the Tigers possession. Following a DePauw fumble early in the second, Chicago drove to the DePauw 22, but the Tigers' defense held again.

The Tigers started their final drive of the half at midfield and Abe Winkle completed four of five passes with the final toss covering five yards to Bryan Mulligan to make it 17-0 with just 35 seconds left in the half.

Lewis intercepted Chicago quarterback Matt Rinklin on the first play of the second half and DePauw took over on the Maroons 23. Four plays later, Marks scored from seven yards and Mallory's extra point made it 24-0 with 12:14 left in the third. The touchdown was Marks' 31st career rushing score which broke the Tigers' career record held by Rich Bonaccorsi (1981-84).

DePauw's final score came on a drive that started at the Chicago 40 following a short punt. Dick completed a 34-yard pass David Araiza before Dorrius Ford carried for four yards and then two for the touchdown that made it 31-0 with 9:00 remaining in the third.

Chicago drove to the DePauw 1 as the third quarter ended and, for the second consecutive week, Mother Nature intervened with a lightning delay. After just over 30 minutes of stoppage, the game resumed and the Maroons scored on the third play of the fourth quarter as Schey picked up the score. The extra point was wide left.

The Maroons had one more chance to score after they recovered a DePauw fumble on the ensuing kickoff, but Chicago couldn't convert on fourth down from the DePauw 10.

DePauw totaled 305 yards of offense as Marks rushed for 79 yards. Dick completed 10 of 15 passes for 124 yards, while Winkle totaled 52 yards on 5-of-10 passing. Mulligan caught six passes for 55 yards.

Schey paced the Maroons with 56 rushing yards, while Rinklin completed 13 of 29 passes for 107 yards. Chase Pierson caught six passes for 33 yards.

Lewis and Andy Brandstatter each recorded 11 tackles, while Hertel totaled three tackles for loss including a pair of sacks. Todd Young paced Chicago with seven tackles.

DePauw resumes Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play when it hosts Sewanee on Saturday, October 7, at 1:30 p.m. on Old Gold Day.
