Tigers split doubleheader with Transylvania

April 25, 2006, Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw won the nightcap of its doubleheader with Transylvania by a 9-2 score and earned a split after dropping the opener by a 4-2 score. DePauw's 14-game win streak came to an end with the loss and the Tigers are now 29-8. Transylvania is 24-7 following the split.

 

In the opener, Transylvania took a 1-0 lead in the fifth when Jessica Holloman led off with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a fly out. She scored on Holly Gibson's triple.

 

The Tigers took the lead in the bottom of the fifth as Jessica Bowlds was hit by a pitch. Annie Morgan pinch ran and stole second. Nicole Kernan walked and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Chelsy Patterson walked before Kristy Mahon scored Morgan with a sacrifice fly. Jessica Krueger later delivered an RBI single.

 

In the seventh, Jessica Broadhead led off with a single and scored on Andrea Fitzpatrick's double. Gibson followed with a single and Fitzpatrick came home on a wild pitch. Brittany Leach made it 4-2 with a pinch-hit double.

 

Krueger led the Tigers with two of their six hits, while Gibson paced the Pioneers with three followed by Holloman and Emily Safstrom with two each.

 

Lauren Curosh dropped to 17-7 with the loss, while Amy Meikel improved to 11-3.

 

Transylvania jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the second game on Heather Metzger's bases loaded walk.

 

The Tigers scored two in the bottom of the first on Rachel Gill's two-run double. Mahon's fourth-inning triple scored Kernan and pushed DePauw's lead to 3-1.

 

The Pioneers added a run in the fifth on Broadhead's sacrifice fly, but the Tigers plated four in the bottom of the fifth. Bowlds had a two-run double, while Kernan drove in a run on a ground out and Patterson singled home a run to make it 7-2.

 

DePauw closed out the scoring in the sixth as Ashley Sewell singled home a run and a Transylvania error allowed the final run to cross the plate.

 

The Tigers totaled 11 hits with Gill leading the way with three and Mahon adding a pair. Carolyn Bartlett had her 19-game hitting streak snapped in the first game, but her single in the second game was her 54th of the season and broke the DePauw single-season record of 53 set by Kristyn Tekulve in 2001. Four different Pioneers collected one each.

 

Katherine Veatch improved to 12-1 with nine strikeouts and just one earned run and four hits in seven innings. Lyndsey Mayberry dropped to 5-3 with the loss.

 

The Tigers return to action on Friday when they compete in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament as the East Division's top seed. DePauw faces the winner of the Millsaps vs. Rose-Hulman game at 1 p.m. CDT at Sewanee.
