Tigers sweep series at Centre; earn SCAC East top seed

April 23, 2006, Danville, Ky. - DePauw swept Centre by scores of 4-2 and 14-0 to improve to 28-7 overall and finish Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference East play at 12-0 and as the division's top seed for this week's conference tournament.

 

The Tigers also extended their school-record win streak to 14 games. Centre dropped to 19-16 overall and 8-4 in the SCAC.

 

In the opener, Lauren Curosh matched the DePauw single-season record with her 17th win against just six losses as she allowed just four hits and struck out six in seven innings. Julia Hubbard dropped to 10-8 with the loss.

 

The Tigers scored one each in the first three innings before Centre closed the gap to 3-2 with one each in the fourth and sixth. DePauw added a single run in the seventh for the win.

 

Carolyn Bartlett led the Tigers with three of their 10 hits, while Jessica Krueger and Chelsy Patterson each added two. Laura Huffnagle had two of Centre's four hits including a solo homer.

 

In the nightcap, the first three DePauw batters drew walks and Bartlett followed with a grand slam. Rachel Gill then added a solo shot to make it 5-0.

 

The Tigers added six more in the second as Gill hit a three-run homer.

 

Bartlett collected three of the Tigers' 10 hits, while Lauren Rees, Gill and Nicole Kernan each added two. Gill drove in five and Barlett four in the win. Maggie Blackburn collected two of Centre's four hits.

 

Katherine Veatch improved to 11-1 by striking out eight and not allowing a walk in five innings in recording her first shutout.

 

DePauw opens SCAC tournament play at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 28, when it faces the winner of the Millsaps vs. Rose-Hulman game at Sewanee. The Tigers host Transylvania on Tuesday in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.

 

NOTES: Lauren Rees broke the DePauw single-season record with 38 runs and Carolyn Bartlett is tied for second with 37 ... Bartlett tied the single-season hit record with 53 and Rachel Gill tied the home run mark with four ... Bartlett broke the single-season RBI record and has 41.
