Late rally not enough as Tigers lose at Centre in final minute

October 28, 2006, Danville, Ky. - DePauw rallied from an 8-point fourth quarter deficit with 11 straight points, but Centre scored with 59 seconds left to take a 28-24 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference win over the Tigers.

 

The Tigers trailed 21-13 after Centre's Adam Clark scored on a 9-yard run with 3:06 left in the third, but came back in the fourth to tie the contest at 21-21 on Jeremiah Marks' 62-yard run and Spud Dick's two-point conversion pass to Brandon Horn with 9:27 remaining. Tyler Mallory's 41-yard field goal with just 5:01 left gave the Tigers a 24-21 edge.

 

Centre started its game-winning drive on its own 31 and quarterback Kevin Phelps completed four of five passes to help move the Colonels to the DePauw 25. Phelps carried it for 13 yards to the 12 before the teams exchanged 5-yard penalties. Running back Adam Blandford then got the call three straight times with the final covering six yards for the winning score on a third-and-four with 59.8 seconds remaining. The Tigers's final drive ended on the first play when the Colonels' Alex Ubelhart picked off Dick's pass at the Centre 40.

 

"I thought we played well enough, offensively, to win today, but we just missed too many tackles on defense," DePauw head coach Matt Walker said.

 

Centre jumped out to a 7-0 lead on Blandford's 4-yard run with 6:21 left in the first and the Tigers matched it with Marks' 14-yard scamper with 2:58 remaining in the first half.

 

DePauw claimed its first lead of the game on the opening possession of the second half when Dick tossed a 27-yard scoring pass to Chris Gasbarra with 11:44 left in the third. The score came on the second play after Bryan Berman picked up 10 yards on a fake punt which kept the drive alive.

 

The point-after was off the mark and DePauw held a 13-7 lead. The Colonels came right back with an 8-play, 65-yard drive capped by Blandford's 15-yard run which made it 21-13.

 

Centre outgained DePauw, 377-282 and held a 19-12 advantage in first downs. Marks paced DePauw with 162 rushing yards on 29 carries as the Tigers totaled 168 on the ground. Marks moved into second place on DePauw's career rushing list with 2,759 yards and also on the single-season charts wtih 956. Blandford led Centre with 134 yards in 26 tries as the Colonels finished with 203 rushing yards.

 

Dick completed 7 of 17 passes for 81 yards with Marks hauling in three and Gasbarra and Bryan Mulligan each finishing with two. Phelps completed 12 of 21 passes for 154 yards and Clark led the way with five receptions.

 

Dustin Hertel led the Tigers with nine total tackles including a first-half sack which was the 31st of his career and broke the DePauw career record of 30 by Doug Lowery (1986-89).

 

Greg Sylvester and Rob Farrow each had eight. Brian Dougherty totaled 10 tackles for the Colonels including a pair of sacks.

 

DePauw wraps up SCAC play on Saturday, November 4, when it hosts Austin College at noon.
