Tigers' defense leads way in 27-6 win at Rhodes

October 14, 2006, Memphis, Tenn. - DePauw's defense limited host Rhodes to just 40 rushing yards and a pair of field goals and Jeremiah Marks rushed for 114 yards as the Tigers won the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest by a 27-6 score.

The win was DePauw's third straight and lifted it's overall record to 5-1 and it's SCAC mark to 2-1. Rhodes dropped to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the SCAC.

DePauw's defense set the tone early when end Luis Davila sacked Rhodes quarterback Mark Oliver and forced a fumble that Rob Farrow scooped up and scored from the seven to make it 6-0 just 6:23 into the contest.

The Tigers made it 13-0 late in the first quarter when Marks scored the first of three tochdowns on a 4-yard run with 3:30 remaining. The Lynx cut the margin to 13-3 when Chris Catalanotto booted a 37-yard field goal with 13:20 left in the half.

Catalanotto cut the gap to 13-6 with a 32-yard field goal with 8:01 remaining in the third. Rhodes started a third-quarter drive near midfield and drove to the DePauw 29, but the Tigers stopped them on fourth-and-one.

Late in the third the Tigers embarked on their longest drive of the game when they started from their own 28. Spud Dick completed consecutive passes to Bryan Mulligan, Bryan Berman and Stephen Horrighs to move the Tigers to the Rhodes 44.

Marks capped off the series with a 1-yard run on fourth-and-goal which pushed DePauw's lead to 20-6 with 9:21 remaining in the contest.

The Tigers' defense stepped up again and forced the Lynx to punt. DePauw started on the Rhodes 43 and Marks eight times including the final one for a 2-yard score that made it 27-6 with only 1:30 remaining.

Marks topped the 100-yard mark for the third time this season and the 13th time in his career with 114 yards on 28 tries. He moved into third place on DePauw's all-time rushing list with 2,507 yards.

Dick completed seven of 12 passes for 60 yards, while Abe Winkle totaled 36 yards on three-of-five passing. Chris Gines and Mulligan each had three catches.

Rhodes managed just 40 rushing yards in 29 attempts with Tyler Lake totaling 47. Oliver completed 11 of 18 passes for 124 yards with four each going to Lake and Justin Sealand.

Dustin Hertel and Andy Brandstatter led the Tigers with nine tackles each, while Hertel's two sacks for 20 yards moved him just one sack away from tying Doug Lowery's DePauw career mark of 30.

Jake McCart paced Rhodes with 15 stops with Mark Young adding 10. Marc Mattioli totaled nine tackles including three sacks.

DePauw travels to Jackson, Miss., for an October 21 game at Millsaps, while Rhodes hosts Colorado College next Saturday.
