DePauw drops pair of 5-4 extra-inning games at Rose-Hulman

April 14, 2005, Terre Haute, Ind. - The DePauw softball team was unable to hold late leads in both ends of its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Rose-Hulman and dropped each by 5-4 scores. The first game went 10 innings, while the nightcap was an eight-inning contest.

DePauw is 18-13-1 overall and 3-7 in the SCAC, while Rose-Hulman is 14-10 overall and 10-0 in the SCAC East. The two teams close out conference regular season play on Friday with a doubleheader at Rose-Hulman.

In the first game, the Tigers took a 4-3 lead in the top of the 10th as the tiebreaker rule placed pinch-runner Hillary Enyart. Ashley Sewell advanced her to third with a bunt and pinch-hitter Whitney Sewell delivered a sacrifice fly to right to score Enyart.

The Engineers started the bottom of the inning with Janae Chaney on second. Erin Locke laid down a bunt that DePauw was unable to field cleanly and reached base. Locke stole second just before Lauren Clark singled to center scoring both runs and winning the game. 

Rose-Hulman took a 2-0 lead in the third  after Nicole Sanders led off with a double and moved to third on Amber Hoke's bunt. Ashley Montgomery laid down a bunt that scored Sanders. Locke later singled to score Pat Viles from second.

In the fifth DePauw tied the game as Kristy Mahon led off with a single and moved to second on Katy Lujan's groundout. Jessica Krueger singled to put runners on first and third. Lauren Curosh followed wit a single that brought home Mahon. Curosh later scored on Laura Schlensker's single to right center.

The Tigers collected 13 hits led by three from Schlensker and two each from Mahon, Lujan, Krueger and Curosh. The Engineers had 11 hits paced by two each from Chaney, Locke, Clark and Sanders. Clark improved to 12-9, while Curosh dropped to 11-6.

DePauw jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning of the second game as Kernan led off with a single, stole second and moved to third on Mahon's bunt. Lujan reached base with a bunt that scored Kernan. Curosh's base hit scored Lujan and Whitney Sewell's single plated Curosh. The Tigers made it 4-0 in the fifth when Mahon led off with a double, moved to third on Lujan's bunt single and scored on Krueger's base hit.

The Engineers scored two in the fifth as Montgomery led off with a double and scored on a DePauw error off the bat of Chaney. Chaney stole second and scored on Locke's single. Rose-Hulman sent the game to extra innings with two more in the seventh as Montgomery led off with a single and advanced to second on Viles' single. Chaney singled to right and moved to second on the throw from the outfield with Montgomery scoring on the play. Curosh replaced Enyart on the mound and got Locke to ground out which scored Viles.

Rose-Hulman scored the game-winner in the eighth as Sanders led off with a walk, moved to second on Hoke's bunt and scored on Montgomery's double.

DePauw finished with 11 hits led by Bowlds, Sewell and Kernan with two each. Montgomery totaled three hits for Rose-Hulman with Viles adding a pair of the Engineers' nine hits. Clark improved to 13-9 with another complete game and Curosh suffered the loss in relief to drop to 11-7.
