DePauw captures Rokicki title with overtime win

November 27, 2005, Greencastle, Ind. - Freshman guard Mike Moore scored seven straight overtime points to move DePauw from a two-point deficit to a five-point lead on the way to an 88-83 win over visiting Manchester in the Mike Rokicki Community Versus Cancer Challenge championship game. Manchester closed to within two in the extra session, but Reid Sakel hit one free throw and Alex Stewart nailed two to seal the victory.

DePauw took its biggest lead at 61-51 after Stewart knocked down a three-pointer with 11:24 remaining in regulation. David Mattingly hit a three and a layup before Kevin Kuhn completed a three-point play to cap an 8-0 run in just 1:21 and close the Tigers' lead to two.

The Spartans led 73-72 before Stephen Schott hit two free throws with 2:17 remaining and another two with 11.9 seconds left to make it 76-73. Mattingly missed a three with five seconds left but Wes Gardner snared the offensive board and got the ball back to Mattingly for the game-tying trey at the buzzer.

A tight first half saw four ties and seven lead changes with DePauw grabbing a 44-43 advantage at the intermission. DePauw hit 65.4 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes including 54.5 percent from three-point range, while the Spartans shot 51.6 percent and nailed 61.5 percent of their three-pointers.

Schott was named the tournament's most valuable player after scoring a career-high 23 and grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds in the title game. Moore, also named to the all-tournament team, scored a collegiate-high 22 and dished out 10 assists. Stewart added 11 points and Matt McDonald finished with 10.

Kuhn led Manchester with 23 points and dished out five assists on the way to earning a spot on the all-tournament team, while Mattingly finished with 17 points and a team-high six assists. Gardner finished with 16 points with Eric Berger adding 15. Gardner hauled down six rebounds in the loss.

The Tigers shot 52.6 percent for the game and nailed 16-of-19 free throws, while the Spartans finished at 42 percent for the game including just 34.2 percent in the second half and overtime.

The Tigers improved to 2-2 with the win, while Manchester dropped to 2-3. In the third place game, Maryville (Mo.) defeated D'Youville 104-65. Mike Turpen of Maryville and Kyle Ward of D'Youville rounded out the all-tournament team.

DePauw returns to action on Wednesday, November 30, when it travels to Wabash for a 7:30 p.m. contest. Manchester travels to Albion on December 3.
