Box Score 2 Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw opened Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Sewanee by scores of 9-1 and 16-3. The Tigers improved to 11-13 overall and 2-0 in the SCAC, while Sewanee dropped to 9-15 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
In the opener, DePauw scored four times in the first as Ashley Sewell drew a base loaded walk before Annie Morgan and Laura Schlensker scored when an attempted pickoff throw to first by the Sewanee catcher went into right field. The final run of the inning came home when Sewell scored on a passed ball.
The hosts scored two in the second on a single by Caroline Provan and added one in the fourth on Jessica Bowlds run-scoring single to center to make it 7-0. In the fifth Sewanee scored on Emily Foster's triple to right that plated Eliza Herrera. DePauw ended the game on the fifth with the eight-run rule as Schlensker drove in Andrea Thompson with a single and Sewell drew another bases loaded walk.
Nicole Kernan, Morgan, Provan, Bowlds and Carli Worthman each finished with two of DePauw's 13 hits. Lauren Curosh improved to 5-6 with the win as she allowed just two hits with three strikeouts and no walks. Helen Wiersma dropped to 1-1 with the loss.
In the nightcap, DePauw scored four in the second as Thompson and Morgan delivered RBI singles and Schlensker drove in a pair with a base hit. The Tigers extended the lead to 6-0 in the third when Bowlds doubled home Provan who led off the inning with a double. Bowlds later scored on a wild pitch.
Sewanee scored one in the fourth when Joy Owens led off with a triple and scored on Foster's two-out single to left.
DePauw put the game away with 10 runs in the fourth including nine with two outs. Schlensker led off with a triple and scored on Provan's groundout. Bowlds then tripled before Worthman walked. Hillary Enyart's single brought home Provan. Walks to Thompson and Kernan made it 9-1. Morgan and Schlensker followed with RBI singles before Sewell walked to make it 12-1. Provan drove in two with a single before a Sewanee error allowed two more runs to score.
Sewanee scored twice in the fifth as Katie Payne's single scored Lisa Rast and Owens' grounder scored Molly Moore.
Schlensker went four-for-four to lead the 17-hit DePauw attack. Bowlds added three hits, while Morgan, Provan, Enyart and Thompson each added a pair. Payne collected two of Sewanee's six hits.
Enyart improved to 5-5 on the season, while Moore dropped to 2-1.
DePauw and Sewanee conclude their series with a doubleheader on Sunday at noon.
