Tigers win game two to earn split with Engineers

Greencastle, Ind. - The Tigers came back from two different deficits in the nightcap of their Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader to defeat Rose-Hulman and earn a split. The Engineers won the first game 4-0.

 

DePauw is now 13-22 overall and concludes SCAC regular season play at 4-8. Rose-Hulman is 20-16 overall and 8-4 in the conference. The Tigers are still in the hunt for a spot in next week's six-team SCAC Championship, but need Centre to sweep or win three of its four-game series at Sewanee on Saturday and Sunday.

 

Rose-Hulman jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the second game as Janae Chaney reached on an error before being forced at second. Lynsey Hart then reached on an error. Lauren Clark singled with two outs before Nicole Sanders drove in a pair with a single to center. The Engineers made it 3-0 in the third as Chaney led off with a single, moved to second on Sarah Bireley's sacrifice bunt and to third on a wild pitch. She scored on Amanda Bower's two-out single.

 

The Tigers scored a pair in the fourth as Laura Schlensker reached on an error and Ashley Sewell singled. Schlensker scored on a wild pitch and Sewell came home on Hillary Enyart's single up the middle.

 

DePauw took the lead with three in the fifth as Nicole Kernan led off with a triple. Annie Morgan followed with a bunt single and then stole second. Kristy Mahon reached on an error that scored Kernan. Sewell singled to right to score to score Morgan and Caroline Provan drove in Mahon with a sacrifice fly to left to make it 5-3.

 

Laura Telezyn  reached second on a one-out throwing error and Chaney moved her to third with a two-out single. Bireley followed with a single that scored Telezyn. Hart was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Bower drove in a pair with a single through the left side to give the Engineers a 6-5 advantage.

 

In the bottom of the sixth Carli Worthman drew a one-out walk and moved to second on Kernan's single. Morgan advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt and Mahon drove in the game-winning runs with a single to left.

 

Enyart retired the side in order in the seventh to improve to 6-8 on the season. Lauren Clark suffered the loss in relief and dropped to 11-10. Kernan and Sewell each had two of DePauw's nine hits, while Bower had three of the Engineers' eight hits and Chaney added two.

 

In the first game the teams battled through five scoreless innings before Rose-Hulman broke through with four in the sixth. Chaney and Bireley each singled and Hart reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Bower cleared the bases with a double to left center and later scored on Sanders' single to left.

 

Clark scattered three singles to notch the victory, while Lauren Curosh dropped to 6-10 with the loss. Six different Rose-Hulman players had one hit apiece and three different Tigers each finished with one hit.

 

DePauw travels to Hanover for a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
