Solid second half leads DePauw to 68-64 win over 15th-ranked Trinity

San Antonio, Texas - Alex Stewart scored 17 of his game-high 20 points in the second half and Joey Hanger scored all 14 of his points in the final 20 minutes to lead visiting DePauw to a 68-64 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference victory over 15th-ranked Trinity. DePauw improved to 13-8 overall and 6-4 in the SCAC, while Trinity dropped to 17-4 overall and 8-2 in the conference.

 

Despite commiting 15 first-half turnovers and shooting only 33 percent from the field, DePauw trailed by just four at 25-21 at the break after being down by as many as nine. The visiting Tigers started to heat up in the second half after Trinity built the lead to 40-32 in the opening six minutes of the second half.

 

DePauw closed the gap to just one at 51-50 as they scored six three-pointers over a five-minute span. Robert Davis then knocked down two free throws with 5:34 remaining to give DePauw its first lead of the game at 52-51.

 

With the contest knotted at 54-54 after Trinity's Peter Murray scored with 3:34 remaining, DePauw scored eight straight points on their next four possessions to take a 62-54 lead with 1:19 left. Matt McDonald started the run with a jumper and Hanger added the final six points.

 

The hosts battled back as Jason Morris hit three three-pointers in a span of just 32 seconds to close the DePauw lead to 64-63. Stewart hit first of two free throws with 20 seconds remaining to push the margin to 65-63. Reid Sakel was whistled for a foul with 14 seconds remaining, but Ross Burt converted just the second of two free throws to close the gap to 65-64.

 

Stewart then made two free throws with 11 seconds left and Morris missed a three-pointer with six seconds remaining. Joey Hanger hit one of two free throws with two seconds left to seal the win.

 

Morris and Chad Stroberg led Trinity with 14 each, while Murray and Sean Devins each scored 10. DePauw held a 35-33 advantage on the boards with John Gergely grabbing a career-high 10 in the victory. DePauw's second half included 53.8 percent shooting from the field including 57.1 percent (8-14) from three-point range and just six turnovers.

 

DePauw returns to action on Friday, February 13, when it hosts Hendrix at 8 p.m.
