Sewanee, Tenn. - DePauw never trailed on the way to a 77-66 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference victory over host Sewanee. The Tigers improved to 16-9 overall and finished Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with a 9-5 record, while Sewanee dropped to 7-18 overall and 4-10 in the conference.
DePauw has earned the fifth seed for next week's SCAC Tournament at Rhodes College in Memphis. The Tigers will face fourth-seed Southwestern in the final quarterfinal game on Friday, February 27, at 8 p.m. CST.
Five Tigers scored in double figures led by Jon Owens with 13 and Todd Capes with 12. John Gergely, Reid Sakel and Alex Stewart each added 11. Michael Brown paced Sewanee with 19 points followed by Eugene Talley with 15 and Joey Garcia with 13.
The Tigers quickly pushed their lead to double digits as they extended an early lead to 11 with an 11-2 run. DePauw lead at the intermission, 38-32. Sewanee closed the margin to three at 42-39 after Brown's tip-in with 18:41 remaining, but Gergely's three-point play, Owens' three-pointer and Matt McDonald's layup made it 50-39.
The hosts later closed the gap to seven with just over five minutes to play, but DePauw scored six straight to put the contest out of reach.
DePauw shot 56 percent for the contest and held Sewanee to just 43 percent. The visiting Tigers outrebounded Sewanee 35-29 with Gergely and McDonald each grabbing seven. Brown led Sewanee with seven boards.
