EVANSTON, Ill. - DePauw outshot host Northwestern from the field, but the Division I Wildcats outrebounded the Tigers 45-33 and outscored them from the line 23-2 to hand DePauw a 59-48 exhibition loss at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
DePauw led by as many as four at 12-8 after Brian Oilar knocked down a three-pointer with 11:48 left in the first half. The Wildcats scored seven straight over the next 1:10 to regain the advantage at 15-12. Alex Stewart's three-pointer with 6:01 remaining in the half capped an 8-1 run that put the Tigers ahead 20-16.
The Wildcats scored the next five on a three-pointer from Vedran Vukusic and a layup by Brandon Lee. DePauw briefly regained the lead at 23-22 on another three-pointer by Stewart with 4:37 left, but Northwestern outscored the Tigers 12-2 down the stretch to go to the break with a 34-25 lead.
Northwestern opened the second half with a 15-6 stretch over the opening eight minutes to take its largest lead of the game at 49-31. The Tigers whittled the lead to as little as 10 in the closing minute.
Stewart was the lone double-figure scorer for the Tigers with 16, while Brian Oilar grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. DePauw shot 36.5 percent from the floor but buried 8-of-20 three-pointers including four by Stewart. Reid Sakel dished out five assists.
Vukusic led Northwestern with 18 points and 10 boards., while Tim Doyle and T.J. Parker each had four assists. The Wildcats shot just 28.8 percent from the floor including only 21 percent in the second half, but connected on 23 of 33 free throw attempts.
DePauw faces 23rd-ranked Randolph-Macon in the opening round of the Illinois Wesleyan Tipoff Tournament on Friday, November 19.
