Conway, Ark. - DePauw put together a solid first half to take a 50-31 lead at the break and held on for a 78-70 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference win at Hendrix. The victory marked the 300th in Bill Fenlon's 19-year career at four Division III schools. DePauw improved to 8-5 overall and 1-1 in the SCAC, while Hendrix dropped to 0-10 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
"In the first 20 minutes we were as good as we've been all year," Fenlon said. "We have to play all 40 minutes, but I am happy to get the win on the road."
The Tigers trailed 14-11 seven minutes into the game, but scored the next 11 points to start a 30-5 run which pushed the lead to 22 at 41-19 with just under five minutes left in the half. In the opening 20 minutes, the Tigers hit eight three-pointers including four by Alex Stewart who scored 16 in the half.
DePauw extended the margin to as many as 28 at 72-44 with 8:13 remaining, but Hendrix outscored the Tigers 26-6 the rest of the way to trim the margin to single digits at the buzzer.
Stewart finished with a game-high 20, while Jon Owens added 12 and Dre Smith totaled 10. Smith and Todd Capes each hauled down seven boards apiece. Justin Jaramillo paced the Warriors with 18, while Brant Bishop added 17 and Peter Curby totaled 10. Brock Carpenter grabbed seven boards for Hendrix. DePauw outrebounded Hendrix 41-34.
