Tigers fall to 1-1 with loss at Hope

Box Score

Holland, Mich. – Hope College quarterback Phil Butler threw for 330 yards and tailback Dan Bloemers rushed for 146 to lead the host Flying Dutchmen to a 26-14 win over DePauw. Each team stands at 1-1 on the season.

Hope jumped out to a 7-0 lead on its first series as Bloemers rushed in from 4 yards to cap a 15-play, 85-yard drive that included two third down and one fourth down conversion.

After a 74-yard kickoff return by Jamarcus Shephard, the Tigers looked to even the score on their second possession as Andy Yoder connected with Shephard on what appeared to be a 30-yard score, but the play was called back after a holding penalty. DePauw's drive then stalled at the Hope 24.

After advancing inside the Hope 25 again and coming up empty, DePauw tied the score at 7-7 on Jackson Rust's 24-yard run just eight seconds into the second quarter. That capped a six-play, 53-yard drive.

The DePauw defense stopped the Flying Dutchmen on their next possession and, after a short punt, the Tiger offense took over on the Hope 30. Backup quarterback Ross Wiethoff rushed for two yards before being sacked for a 13-yard loss. His third down pass fell incomplete and the Tigers were forced to punt.

On the next possession, Hope started on its own 20 and after Bloemers gained one yard on second down, Butler teamed with Joe Verschueren for a 79-yard score with 11:39 left in the second quarter. The point-after attempt failed and Hope held a 13-7 lead.

Later in the half, Hope started its third scoring drive on its own 6 and marched 94 yards in eight plays with Butler tossing an 18-yard scoring pass to Jake Schrock. Nate Barnett's point-after made it 20-7.

Early in the third quarter, Hope's Jeff Eldersveld returned a punt 61 yards to the DePauw 27. Butler connected with Scott Jeschke for 10 yards and Bloemers rushed for 16 to the DePauw 1 and then scored his second touchdown of the game on the next play. David Blackburn blocked the point-after and Hope led 26-7 with 9:15 left in the third.

On its next possession, the Tigers drove to the Hope 6, but Yoder's pass on third down was incomplete and he was sacked on fourth down. DePauw's final score came with 7:27 left in the game as Wiethoff completed a 15-yard pass to high school teammate Brian Culp. Ben Murray's extra-point kick made it 26-14. Wiethoff rushed for 37 of the Tigers' 62 yards on the drive. The Tigers ended the game by covering 70 yards in 13 plays and advanced to the Hope 4 as time expired.

Hope totaled 468 yards of offense including 353 in the first half. DePauw finished with 205 rushing yards as they topped the 200-yard mark for the second straight week. Rust gained 94 rushing yards on 12 carries, while Matt King added 64 on 13 carries.

Andy Yoder finished with 18-of-30 passing for 132 yards, while Wiethoff finished with the one completion for a touchdown in six attempts. Joe Verschueren caught seven passes for 141 yards for Hope, while Shephard  totaled 223 all-purpose yards with 19 rushing on two carries, 58 receiving on six catches and 146 on four kickoff returns.

The DePauw defense recorded three sacks on the afternoon as well as three interceptions. Obinna Ugokwe totaled 11 tackles and Justin Tillis added nine. Matt Beaver paced Hope with 15 stops and Andy Snyder had 13.

DePauw travels to Hanover on Saturday, September 20, while Hope is at Wheaton on the 27th.
