Greencastle, Ind. - The DePauw field hockey team opened the 2003 season with a 4-1 win over visiting Earlham College at McKeen Field.
The Tigers jumped out to an early lead on Becca Gaines' first collegiate goal just 3:29 into the game with an assist from Caitlin Driscoll. The margin remained 1-0 until 1:40 into the second half when Driscoll scored on an assist from Christin Serenbetz.
Jane Schaadt scored midway through the second half on a penalty stroke before Erin Murphy made it 4-0 with an assist by Emily Wiscomb with 3:15 remaining. Earlham scored its lone goal with 26 seconds left off the stick of Lauren Fitpatrick.
DePauw outshot Earlham 30-6 including 19-2 in the second half and held a 12-3 advantage in corners. Sara Shalowitz recorded five saves in her first collegiate game in goal for the Tigers.
The Tigers host Centre College on Sunday.
