Four DePauw players scored in double figures as the Tigers improved to 6-3 on the season with an 84-71 victory over Barat College in the Clarke College Holiday Tournament in Dubuque, Iowa. Barat dropped to 2-11 with the loss.
The Tigers advanced to the consolation finals where they will face Lakeland (Wis.) College on Tuesday, December 30, at 3:45 p.m. CST. DePauw and Lakeland faced each other in the first game of the season at the Transylvania Tipoff Tournament with the Tigers winning, 79-77. Tuesday's live broadcast on WGRE may be accessed here.
Joey Hanger scored a career-high 18, while Alex Stewart added 17 in the victory. Jon Owens scored 13 and Dre Smith posted his first collegiate double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Antwan Collins led Barat with 15 followed by Jevon Mamon and LeBron Massey with 13 each and John Foster with 10.
The Tigers trailed by as many as nine in the first half, but battled back at the end of the first half with an 11-2 run over the final 2:41 to take a 44-40 advantage at the break.
DePauw extended the margin to eight early in the second half, but Barat stayed within five before taking its only second-half lead at 60-59 on Jonathan Tate's three-pointer with 10:02 remaining. A 13-2 DePauw run later in the half broke open a tie game and gave the Tigers a 74-63 lead. That margin would never dip back into single digits.
After struggling on the boards in Sunday's loss to Wisconsin-Platteville, the Tigers dominated the Bulldogs with a 49-30 advantage. DePauw hauled down 18 on the offensive glass. In addition to Smith's 10 rebounds, Derek Lawrence grabbed a career-high nine. Collins led Barat with eight boards.
The Tigers shot 45.3 percent from the floor and limited the Bulldogs to just 41.8 percent. Hanger matched career highs with six assists and four steals.
