Terre Haute, Ind. - DePauw committed five turnovers including one in the red zone in a 22-12 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference loss at Rose-Hulman. The Tigers dropped to 5-4 overall and finished SCAC play at 3-3, while the Engineers improved to 5-4 overall and 3-2 in the conference.

The Tigers opened the game strong as the defense forced the Engineers to punt after their first three plays and the offense embarked on an 11-play, 68-yard drive that culminated in Andy Yoder's 3-yard pass to fullback Chris Brolsma which was the junior's first pass reception of his career. John Wallace's point-after attempt was blocked, but DePauw held a 6-0 lead with 8:14 left in the first.

"I give them credit," DePauw head coach Nick Mourouzis said of the Engineers. "They're a good football team, but we can't expect to win with five turnovers."

Early in the second quarter Eric Lewis returned a Rose-Hulman punt to the Engineers' 43 and the Tigers drove to the 29 before Matt Jackson forced Matt King to fumble at the 22 and Nick Dames recovered for Rose-Hulman. The Engineers quickly took advantage quarterback Cameron Hummel scampered 61 yards on third-and-one to cap a five-play, 82-yard drive. Cory Wright nailed the extra point to give the Engineers a 7-6 advantage with 10:20 remaining in the half.

The Tigers again drove into Rose-Hulman territory on their next possession, but Ross Wiethoff was picked off by Bryce Beckstrom at the Rose-Hulman 24 and returned it to the 35. Later in the half, the Tigers fumbled near midfield and the Engineers recovered. They drove to the Tigers' 21 before Hummel fumbled after a hit by Joseph Di Salvo at the 20 and Di Salvo recovered with 1:32 left.

Wiethoff marched the Tigers down the field by completing five of six passes and rushing for 10 yards. Freshman Topher Jones came in for a 35-yard field goal attempt that was blocked by Zach Peiri as time expired. The Tigers totaled 253 yards of offense and 15 first downs in the opening 30 minutes, but trailed 7-6.

On its first series of the second half, the Engineers used a 54-yard pass play from Hummel to Matt Horne to advance deep into DePauw territory. Rose-Hulman advanced to the DePauw 3 and, after a delay of game penalty, Wright came on to attempt a 25-yard field goal. David Blackburn blocked the kick and Justin Tillis recovered it and returned it 51 yards to the Rose-Hulman 41.

Four plays later Jackson Rust ran 25 yards for the score. The try for two failed, but DePauw led 12-7 with 6:58 remaining in the third.

Hummel put the Engineers ahead with 58 seconds left in the quarter on a 1-yard run that came on the first play after a 58-yard pass from Hummel to Charlie Key. Hummel teamed with Joe Kachmar II for the two-point conversion to give Rose-Hulman a 15-12 advantage.

Early in the fourth the Engineers appeared to be driving toward another score before a DePauw defensive stand gave the Tigers the ball at the Rose-Hulman 11. Wiethoff rushed for nine yards on first down and then found an opening on the next play and turned it into a 47-yard gain to the Engineers' 33. Jamarcus Shephard hauled in a 16-yard pass from Wiethoff to take it to the 17, but on the next play Wiethoff's attempted pitch to Rust was low and recovered by Rose-Hulman's Tim Wilson at the Engineers' 18.

The Engineers consumed over five minutes in driving to the DePauw 18, but Wright's 35-yard field goal missed to the left and DePauw took over on its own 20 with 3:06 left. A holding penalty on first down and a sack on sack on the next play backed the Tigers to their own 2-yard line. Wiethoff picked up 13 yards on a second-down run, but Brian Knaup intercepted Wiethoff's pass on the next play and returned it to the 13.

DePauw's defense put up a fight, but Hummel picked up his third rushing touchdown of the game with a 9-yard run with 1:45 left. Wright's extra point lifted the Engineers' lead to 22-12. The Tigers drove to the Rose-Hulman 20, but were unable to convert on fourth down and Rose-Hulman ran out the clock for the victory.

Hummel finished with 130 rushing yards on 21 carries, while Key added 78 on 24 attempts. Hummel completed 14 of 22 passes for 235 yards. Clint Hammes caught six passes for 63 yards and Kely had four for 90 yards. The Engineers finished with 467 total yards including 232 on the ground.

Wiethoff led DePauw with 74 yards on just eight carries, while Rust followed with 71 on 11 tries. Wiethoff also completed eight of 14 passes for 107 yards with two interceptions. Yoder finished with 12-of-21 passing for 119 yards. Brian Culp led the Tigers with career highs of seven catches for 114 yards with Shephard adding six receptions for 75 yards.

Defensively, DePauw sacked Hummel four times as Joshua Swift finished with two and Cory Partlow and Eric Lewis each added one. Partlow led the Tigers with 14 tackles including three for losses with Jeremy Legge chipping in 10. Dames paced the Engineers with 12 tackles.

DePauw concludes its season at home on Saturday, November 15, when it hosts Wabash College in the annual Monon Bell game. The Tigers and Little Giants are tied 50-50-9 headed into the 110th meeting and the 72nd for possession of the Monon Bell. Kickoff is set for 1:07 p.m. and the game will be televised nationally by HDNet.
