Pirates shoot down Tigers, 90-86

Greencastle, Ind. - Visiting Southwestern shot 71 percent in the first half and nearly 60 percent for the game on the way to a 90-86 Southern Collegiate Athletic win over DePauw.

Southwestern improved to 9-6 overall and 3-2 in the SCAC, while DePauw fell to 9-6 overall and 4-1 in conference play. The loss also snapped DePauw's six-game win streak, its 10-game SCAC string and its 14-game SCAC home court winning streak.

The teams were involved in an offensive shootout in the first half with the Pirates connecting on 71 percent from the floor to DePauw's 61.5 percent. The half included five ties and six lead changes before Southwestern used a 9-0 run to take its biggest lead at 58-47 with 2:12 remaining. DePauw outscored the Pirates 6-1 down the stretch to close the halftime gap to 59-53.

The Tigers opened the second half by scoring six straight to take a 60-59 lead before Southwestern regained the lead and led by as many as eight on four occasions. They still led 84-77 after Dan Slezak's layup with 5:29 remaining.

Alex Stewart ignited a 7-0 DePauw run that tied the game at 84-84 as he hit two threes and Jeremy Bettis added a free throw to knot the score with 2:58 left. Kyle Ellisor put the Pirates back in the lead with two free throws, but Bettis tied it at 86-86 with a pair of charity tosses with 2:38 remaining.

Justin Westmoreland put Southwestern ahead for good with a jumper at the 1:12 mark. The Tigers were whistled for an offensive foul on the ensuing possession to give the ball back to the Pirates with 58 seconds left. Michael Dunleavy's three-pointer with 30 seconds left was off the mark and a tie-up for the rebound gave the ball back to Southwestern via the possession arrow. Daniel Tumis then knocked in two free throws with nine seconds left to preserve the win.

Bettis led the Tigers with 22 points, nine rebounds, four steals and three blocks, while Joe Ringger scored 21 and grabbed eight boards. Stewart finished with 15 in the loss. The Tigers shot just under 51 percent for the game, but were outrebounded (30-25) for the first time in the last eight games.

Ellisor led six Pirates in double figures with 13, while Slezak and Tumis each scored 12. Hugh Arrington and Dunleavy each scored 11 and Westmoreland added 10 in the win.

DePauw hosts Sewanee on Friday, January 24, at 8 p.m., while Southwestern hosts Trinity on Saturday, January 25, at 8 p.m. CST.
