Westerville, Ohio. - Mike Howland drove the length of the court and nailed a three-pointer with two seconds left to give seventh-ranked DePauw (24-3) a 90-87 sectional semifinal win over top-ranked Washington University (26-1). The Tigers take on sectional host Otterbein (27-3) at 7 p.m., Saturday, March 9, for the rite to advance to the national semifinals. Otterbein defeated Randolph-Macon 85-72 in the second sectional semifinal game.
The Bears led 85-84 after Matt Tabash hit two free throws with 1:27 left. Howland made one of two with 20 seconds remaining to tie the score, but Jeremy Bettis snagged the rebound on the second miss and was fouled with 18 seconds left. He hit both charity tosses to five the Tigers an 87-85 lead.
Tabash then scored on a layup with eight seconds remaining to knot the score at 87 before Howland nailed the game-winner
Washington built as much as 14-point first-half lead before the Tigers closed the gap to 52-44 at the break. The Bears led 66-56 with 14:05 left in the game before the Tigers went on a 17-2 run over the next 6:27. Five different Tigers scored during the run with Joey Hanger leading the way with six.
Howland finished with a career-high 26, while Joe Ringger scored 20. Joe Nixon added 16 and Bettis followed with 15 points and nine rebounds.
Chris Jeffries led Washington with 30 followed by Jarriot Rook with 15 and Dustin Tylka with 13. Joel Parrott scored 11 and Tabash scored 10.
