Senior Joe Nixon tied a school-record with eight three-pointers on the way to a 30-point effort in the Tigers' 81-54 win over Southwestern.
Greencastle, Ind. - Senior Joe Nixon hit eight three-pointers to tie the DePauw single-game record and finished with 30 points to lead the Tigers to an 81-54 win over visiting Southwestern.
Nixon buried seven of 10 three-pointers in the first half on the way to a 23-point outburst as the Tigers led 47-10 at the break. He opened the game with a pair of treys before Joe Ringger scored to make it 8-0 just 2:28 into the game.
The Tigers led 13-4 with 14:52 left in the half and outscored the Pirates 34-6 the rest of the half including an 18-0 run over the final six minutes. Nixon then opened the second half with four straight points to push the margin to its largest of the game at 51-10.
Ringger added 16 points in the win and Mike Howland recorded 11 assists with no turnovers. Nixon grabbed a team-high nine rebounds as the Tigers held a 42-27 advantage on the boards.
Hugh Arrington paced Southwestern with 12 points, while Justin Westmoreland recorded a double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds.
The Tigers, ranked seventh by Basketball America and 12th by D3hoops.com, improved to 18-3 overall and 12-2 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Southwestern fell to 8-12 overall and 6-7 in the SCAC.
DePauw hosts Trinity on Sunday at noon in a game that will go a long way in deciding the SCAC champion. Trinity enters the contest with a 14-6 overall mark and a 10-3 record in SCAC play after a 53-34 win at Rose-Hulman on Friday.
