Albion tops DePauw, 82-64

Box Score

Albion, Mich. (12-19-02) - Host Albion scored the first 16 points of the second half to push a 15-point halftime lead to 31 and deliver the knockout blow to the Tigers. The Britons improved to 7-2 with an 82-64 victory over 3-4 DePauw.

Albion jumped out to an 18-6 lead in the opening 6:25 as Brett Quayle scored 12 of his game-high 26 during the run. The Tigers closed the gap to four by scoring the next eight as a pair of three-point plays from Joey Hanger sandwiched a Derek Lawrence bucket.

The Tigers were still within seven after Jeremy Bettis hit two free throws with 6:42 left in the half to make it 28-21, but the Britons closed the half with a 12-4 spurt to extend the halftime margin to 40-25.

The first half stats told the story as Albion scored 15 points off of DePauw's eight turnovers, while Albion committed just four turnovers leading to only two Tiger points. The Tigers shot just under 31 percent from the floor in the half and were 0-for-8 from three-point range.

If the Tigers were to make a run in the second half, the hosts had other plans as they simply buried DePauw from long range in the opening three minutes.

Quayle nailed back-to-back treys in the opening minute of the second half before Michael Thomas and Quayle each hit three-pointers to make it 52-25 with 17:41 left in the half. Pat Moultrie and Thomas then added buckets to give the Britons their biggest lead at 56-25 with 16:53 left. Meanwhile, the Tigers missed their first five shots of the half.

Over the next four minutes the Tigers whittled away the lead as Bettis and Jon Owens scored buckets before Robert Davis knocked down a three and Hanger hit back-to-back treys to cap a 13-0 run that closed the gap to 56-38 with 12:34 remaining.

The Tigers, however, got no closer as Albion push the lead back to as many as 28 points at 76-48.

"We're groping," DePauw head coach Bill Fenlon said following the loss. "Groping for an identity."

"They're (Albion) a really good team and we really lack some confidence right now."

In addition to Quayle's 26, Thomas added 16 points and five assists with Joe Finland chipping in 13 off the bench. Travis DePree finished with a game-high eight assists as Albion totaled 25 for the evening.

Bettis and Hanger each scored 15 with Aaron Drake adding 10. Hanger and Drake each posted career highs in the loss.

Albion shot 61.5 percent in the second half and 52.5 percent for the game, while the Tigers finished the contest with 40 percent shooting from the floor.

The Britons held a 36-29 advantage on the boards with 15 of the 36 coming off the offensive glass. DePauw finished with 14 offensive rebounds. Chris Hawkins led Albion with seven rebounds and Todd Humerickhouse paced the Tigers with six.

DePauw returns to action on Saturday, December 28, when they face Loras (Iowa) at 5:45 p.m. PST (8:45 in Greencastle) in the opening game of the adidas D3 Desert Shootout.
