Greencastle, Ind. - Visiting Grace College scored seven straight points late in the game to turn a DePauw two-point lead into its own five-point advantage on the way to a 64-58 win over the Tigers. DePauw slipped to 3-3 on the season, while Grace improved to 9-4.
The Tigers held a 54-52 lead after Wes Thornhill's three-pointer with 3:20 left. Grace came back with seven straight points beginning with Corey Smith's three-pointer and two free throws each from Daniel Bucher and Derric Isensee to make it 59-54 with 1:17 remaining.
Jeremy Bettis knocked down a three with 1:03 left to close the gap to two, but Grace's Matt Abernethy hit two free throws on the Lancers' next possession to push the margin back to four with 30 seconds left.
Thornhill made one of two free throws with 16 seconds left, but guests nailed three of four from the line in the final 14 seconds for the six-point win.
Grace led by as many as six in the first half, but a 13-2 DePauw run late in the opening 20 minutes gave them a 32-27 lead with 1:07 remaining. The Tigers went to the break with a 32-30 lead.
The Lancers regained the lead in a see-saw opening six minutes of the second half at 40-38, but DePauw scored nine straight as Alex Stewart scored five and Bettis added four to give the Tigers their biggest lead of the game at 47-40 with 12:07 left.
Grace then went on a 10-2 run to take a 52-50 advantage with 4:27 remaining.
Abernethy led Grace with 21 and scored 17 in the second half. Smith followed with 19 and Andrew Kipsey added 10. Bucher finished with four assists and seven steals for the Lancers.
Bettis and Stewart each scored 20 with Stewart's establishing a new career high. Bettis added seven rebounds and Thornhill dished out six assists.
The Lancers hit 18-of-19 free throws with their lone miss coming on their final attempt. The Tigers, meanwhile, connected on just 8-of-17 from the charity stripe.
DePauw travels to Albion on Thursday, December 19, for a 6:30 p.m. contest.
