Franklin, Ind. - Jeremy Bettis scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Joe Ringger added 19 points and 10 boards to lead DePauw to a 68-59 win at Franklin in the championship game of the Franklin Goaltenders-Bankers Classic. The Tigers improved to 3-2 with their third straight victory, while Franklin fell to 2-6.
Bettis was named the tournament MVP after totaling 45 points and 22 rebounds in the two games. Ringger and Jon Owens also earned all-tournament team honors. Ringger finished the tournament with 31 points and 15 boards in 32 minutes. After scoring 16 points and dishing out five assists on Friday, Owens scored six points, hauled down five rebounds, dished out two assists and led the Tigers' defensive effort on the perimeter on Saturday.
The teams battled through a tight first half until the Tigers scored 11 straight points over the final four minutes of the half to take a 35-19 advantage at the break. During that stretch, Bettis scored five of his 16 first-half points.
The Tigers stretched that lead to as many as 19 early in the second half and still held a 14-point lead at 56-42 after Ringger's basket with 6:51 left. The Grizzlies scored the next seven points over a 1:25 stretch to close the gap to seven at 56-49.
DePauw's lead was whittled to 58-54 after Chad Miller buried two free throws with 3:06 remaining. Ringger scored the next four points to push the margin back to eight. Jared Sabelhaus hit two free throws with 1:04 left and Ringger scored a bucket with 35 seconds left before Scott Study hit a three with 26 seconds remaining to close the gap to 64-59. Wes Thornhill and Bettis each hit two free throws in the final 22 seconds to put the game away.
The Tigers outrebounded Franklin, 39-28 and shot 49 percent from the floor while holding the hosts to 36 percent shooting.
