Chicago, Ill. - A stingy DePauw defense blanked host Chicago for three quarters on the way to the Tigers' 28-12 win over the Maroons.

Chicago entered the contest ranked 14th in Division III with 466.3 yards of offense per outing and averaging just under 33 points per contest, but DePauw limited the hosts to 310 yards including just 29 on the ground.

With backup quarterbacks Karl Odenwald and Ross Wiethoff splitting time throughout the game and making their first collegiate quarterbacking appearances, the Tigers built a 21-0 halftime lead. Matt King's 1-yard run with 4:57 left in the first came ahead of a pair of touchdown passes from Wiethoff to Dan Ryan. The first, covering 14 yards, came with 5:05 left in the first half, while the second was with 1:19 remaining in the half and totaled 41 yards.

Chicago cut the gap to 21-6 after Joe Polaneczky caught a 1-yard pass from Josh Dunn with 14:01 left in the contest. With 6:22 left in the game, Jackson Rust evaded several tacklers on the way to a 21-yard scoring run to push the lead to 28-6.

Aaron Carlock ran in from two yards out with 3:01 left to cut the DePauw lead to 28-12.

Wiethoff completed 11 of 16 passes for 125 yards and the two touchdowns, while Odenwald completed eight of 12 for 44 yards. King finished with 51 rushing yards on 11 carries, while Wiethoff had 39 on nine tries and Rust had 37 on eight carries.

Ryan hauled in eight passes for 107 yards and extended his streak of games with a touchdown reception to 15 straight with his two scoring receptions. Ryan, who holds the DePauw and SCAC records with 35 touchdown receptions, moved into second place in school history with 160 career receptions behind Jay True's (1977-80) 195. He also moved within 28 yards of True's record of 2,567 receiving yards.

Dunn completed 20 of 40 passes for 185 yards for Chicago with Mike Healy catching eight for 77 yards.

Defensively, Charles Stanback and Dustin Hertel each collected sacks for DePauw, while Matt Stahley intercepted a pass and broke up two others. Josh Angel also had a pair of breakups in the win. Angel and Mike Laszynski each had nine tackles. Mat Armbruster totaled eight stops for Chicago.

DePauw returns to SCAC action when it hosts Sewanee at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 12. Chicago travels to Pomona-Pitzer next week.
