September 15, 2001, Holland, Mich. - The host Flying Dutchmen scored 27 unanswered points to wipe out a DePauw lead on the way to a 41-21 win over the Tigers. DePauw slipped to 1-2 on the season, while Hope improved to 1-1.

"We did not execute well today," DePauw Head Coach Nick Mourouzis said. "We had too many dropped balls on offense and they beat us with big plays."

Hope jumped out to an early 7-0 lead on a 77-yard pass play from Phil Butler to Brian Adloff. The touchdown pass was the first of a Hope-record six for Butler who was making his first career start.

The Tigers cut the margin to 7-3 on Ben Murray's 29-yard field goal with 6:51 left in the first. They then took their first lead of the game at 9-7 on a five-yard pass from Jason Lee to Dan Ryan with 13:23 remainin in the first half.

Hope regained the lead on the next drive as Butler connected with Chad Booker for a 20-yard score to make it 14-9 with 9:16 remaining in the half. Jackson Rust's six-yard run, the first rushing touchdown for the Tigers this season, gave the Tigers a 15-14 lead with just 58 seconds left in the half.

The Tigers' first halftme lead of the season looked safe, but the hosts started their final drive of the half on their own 44 and scored with just 1.7 seconds on the clock as Butler and Mike Gle teamed for an 18-yard score.

Hope extended the lead to 28-15 midway through the third with a 15-play, 65-yard drive that ended with Butler's nine-yard pass to Booker. The Flying Dutchmen converted three third downs and one fourth down during the series.

The Tigers drove to the Hope 15 on their next possession, but were stopped on downs. Early in the fourth, DePauw again reached the Hope red zone, but were again shut down as they got as close as the Dutchmen 17-yard line.

Hope capitalized quickly with a four-play drive that covered 75 yards and ended with Butler's 68-yard pass to Gle with 9:02 left in the game. Lee was intercepted on the next drive before Butler and Gle hooked up for the third time with this play covering 16 yards and giving Hope a 41-15 lead.

Matt King wrapped up the scoring with a nine-yard run  with 4:03 left to make it 41-21.

The Tigers held Hope to 77 rushing yards, but Butler connected on 20 of 42 passes for 335 yards as Hope outgained DePauw in total offense 412-357.

Lee completed 28 of 54 passes for 276 yards with nine going to John Stephens for 103 yards, eight to Andy Tolle for 61 yards and six to Dan Ryan for 79 yards and a touchdown. Rust totaled 52 rushing yards on just seven carries, while King added 48 on nine attempts. Jason Geringer intercepted two Hope passes to raise his season total to three.

DePauw travels to San Antonio for a key Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference game on Saturday, September 22.

GAME NOTES: A pre-game ceremony in honor of Tuesday's national tragedies included a moment of silence and comments from Hope president James Bultman, Holland mayor Albert McGeehan and U.S. Representative Peter Hoekstra who drove all night from Washington. The teams also met at midfield following the game for a prayer.
