Oct. 6, 2001, Sewanee, Tenn. - The Tigers snapped their three-game losing streak in impressive fashion as they knocked off host Sewanee by a 34-18 score. The win lifted DePauw's record to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, while Sewanee fell to 4-2 overall and 1-2 in the SCAC.

The offense totaled 447 yards against a defense that ranked fourth in Division III in total defense at just over 164 yards per contest and the defense shut down Sewanee's 18th-ranked rushing attack by allowing just 61 ground yards.

"We really played a complete game today," DePauw coach Nick Mourouzis said. "We had a solid effort from our offense, defense and special teams."

The story of the early portion of the game was the DePauw defense as the Tigers held Sewanee without a first down through the opening quarter and provided the offense an average beginning drive location of the Sewanee 48-yardline.

DePauw's offense wasn't able to capitalize in the opening 15 minutes, but put 20 points on the board during the second quarter beginning with a 25-yard pass from Jason Lee to Andy Tolle with 12:55 left in the first half.

The hosts took advantage of a DePauw fumble as Trumaine Polk forced Jackson Rust to cough up the ball at the DePauw 43. Polk then fumbled the ball and Esau McCaulley recovered and was stopped at the DePauw five. Three plays later Cayleb Harris rushed in from four yards to tie the contest.

DePauw wasted little time in responding as they scored on the second play of the ensuing drive. Lee teamed with Dan Ryan who outran the defense down the sideline for a 71-yard score with 5:54 left in the half. Three minutes later, Lee and Stephens combined for a 38-yard score on the first play of a drive to make it 20-7.

Lee was picked off by Towaski Hunt on the Tigers' third play of the second half and Hunt returned the ball to the DePauw 21. The defense then forced Sewanee into a 36-yard field goal by Ben Tuck with 12:36 left in the third.

A pair of 10-play drives capped off the DePauw scoring as Matt King scored on a 3-yard run with 6:21 remaining in the third and Lee tossed a 27-yard scoring pass to a wide-open Mark Rinehart on the first play of the fourth quarter to make it 34-10.

Sewanee's only sustained drive of the game started at their own 18, midway through the fourth quarter, and ended with Mack Benton's 3-yard reception from Knox Vanderpool with 5:02 left.

Lee finished with 353 passing yards as he completed 28 of 50 passes with four touchdowns to four different receivers. Tolle finished with nine catches for 71 yards with Stephens adding eight for 85 yards and Ryan sevn for 156.

The DePauw defense sacked Sewanee quarterbacks six times including five on starter Jon Cole who was playing in place of injured Kirk Holtgrewe.

DePauw returns to Blackstock Stadium for the first time since September 1 when they host Blackburn College at 1:30 p.m. on October 13.
