Greencastle, Ind. - Junior Michelle Aymond scored a pair of second-half goals to lift DePauw to a 2-0 win over visiting John Carroll University in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship.
DePauw, 15-3 and ranked 10th in Division III, advanced to play at regional host and second-ranked Ohio Wesleyan (17-1) at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. John Carroll finished the season with an 11-7-1 record. The win was DePauw's ninth straight.
The teams battled to a scoreless tie in the first half before Corinne Scott crossed a ball to Aymond who headed it in at 58:59.
"That was a great goal," DePauw head coach John Carter said.
DePauw added an insurance score with just 4:38 left when junior Megan Bevington drove a free kick off the cross bar and Aymond was there for the rebound shot and the goal.
"John Carroll did a good job in the midfield of denying us space," Carter added. "They're a tough defending tam and we had to fight and battle to win."
Sophomore Allison Glibkowski recorded five saves in recording the shutout. John Carroll's Kelly Spitaleri totaled four saves.
Each team had nine shots and DePauw held a 3-1 advantage in corners.
