Box Score

STATISTICS

September 28, 1996, Albion, Mich. - Despite the fact that the Tigers lost at Albion by a 51-9 count, the game was tight through the first quarter. The teams exchanged field goals on their first possession with Jason Gardner booting a 37-yarder for the Tigers.

Early in the second the Britons scored to take a 10-3 lead. Twice on their next series, the Tigers were forced to punt but an Albion penalty and then a fumble on a punt return gave the Tigers the ball on the Albion 33. The Old Gold failed to pick up a first down, but punted to the Albion seven yard line. The Britons wasted no time in responding as quarterback Kyle Klein connected with Chris Barnett for a 93-yard score.

The Tigers then drove into Albion territory on their next series, but Bernie Haskins' (Jr., Elkhart/Central) second down pass was picked off and returned for a touchdown. In a six-minute span, Albion scored 21 points to take a 24-3 lead. DePauw then scored with 3:12 left as David Schubert (So., Coatesville/North Putnam) ran in from two yards out. Albion, however, scored twice in the final 2:23 to take a 37-9 halftime lead.

Haskins completed 20 of 43 passes for 213 yards with two interceptions. His top targets were Brian Jennings (So., Tell City/Tell City) with five catches for 74 yards and Joe Cheshire (So., Indianapolis/North Central). The Tigers totaled 342 yards of offense including 308 through the air. Klein completed 20 of 32 passes for Albion for 370 yards and three touchdowns.
