DePauw Finishes with Opening Weekend Split

Westfield, Ind. - DePauw fell behind early to Aurora and couldn't catch the Spartans as the Tigers fell by a 6-1 score. DePauw dropped to 1-1, while the Spartans moved to 1-0.

Aurora scored a pair in the second inning as Tyler Patton and Nick Czarnecki led off with doubles down the left field line and, after Jaden Holgado advanced Czarnecki to third, Ryan Buck delivered an RBI single.

Joe Lukancic led off the Aurora third with a single and moved to third when a throw to retire him at second off of Zack Tarrant's grounder was wide. Kyle Mack reached on an error with Lukancic scoring to make it 3-0.

Buck reached on an error in the fourth before Matthew Washington and Isaac Goddard singled to load the bases. Lunkancic's single brought home Buck. The Spartans extended the lead to 5-0 in the sixth as Washington drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a failed pickoff throw to first. Lukancic brought home Washington with a two-out single.

The Tigers' lone run came in the seventh as Louis Florida singled with two outs and moved to second on Owen Vander Velde's base hit. Bryson Dorsey followed with an RBI single.

Aurora wrapped up the scoring in the eighth as Alex Panico led off with a single, moved to second on Washington's sacrifice bunt and scored on Lukancic's single.

Five different Tigers collected one hit each, while Lukancic had four of Aurora's five with Czarnecki and Goddard collecting two each.

Jamison Lewis took the loss and dropped to 0-1, while Conner Hogan improved to 1-0 after pitching six scoreless innings while striking out six. Edgar Barba earned the save after striking out six in three innings.

DePauw travels to Rhodes College for a 1 p.m. CST game on Friday, Feb. 27.
