Tigers Stun Hosts Sewanee in Season Opener

Aug. 31, 2019 (Sewanee, Tenn.)- The DePauw University field hockey team came out with energy and precision in their 3-2 regular-season opener win over host Sewanee.

Taking their pre-season games to heart and improving their passing accuracy, the Tigers were quick to the ball and efficient in moving the play into Sewanee's half.

It took DePauw just four minutes in the first quarter for Kate Milner, who was assisted by Cathy Zesiger to work together and find the back of the cage. Taking the lead in the first quarter proved to be an indicator of the dominance the Tigers showed throughout the rest of the game.

Though Sewanee finally answered in the second quarter, the Tigers defensive line kept with their marks and utilized well-timed lunges to maintain possession of the ball in the remainder of the second quarter.

Following halftime, DePauw was able to capitalize on its third penalty corner. Milner entered the ball into play, which was then fielded by Maddie DeAscentis and directed to Zesiger who earned her first goal of the season and put the Tigers back up by one.

Not willing to go away without a fight, Sewanee answered with yet another game tieing goal, but DePauw quickly erased that equalizer.

By quickly driving the ball down the sideline, the offensive line eventually finds Milner in the striking circle where she not only earns her second goal of the season but the game-winning goal as well.

An all-around team effort was showcased against the host team, and it resulted in a well-fought win against an equally aggressive opponent.

The Tigers return to the field on Sunday, Sept. 1, at 1 PM EDT against Rhodes College. Click HERE to watch live.
