Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw gave sixth-ranked Wittenberg a battle in the home finale at the Neal Fieldhouse, but the guests overcame a 1-0 deficit to take a 3-1 (16-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-15) North Coast Athletic Conference win over the host Tigers.
DePauw dropped to 16-8 overall and 5-3 in the NCAC, while Wittenberg improved to 21-2 overall and 8-0 in conference play for its 10th straight NCAC title and fifth consecutive outright championship. The loss snapped DePauw's 14-match home court win streak.
The host Tigers hit .302 in the opening set to Wittenberg's .026 and rallied from a 6-4 deficit by winning eight straight points to take the lead for good. DePauw jumped out to a 5-1 advantage in the second set before Wittenberg evened the count at 7-7. The set was last tied at 19-19 before Wittenberg outscored DePauw 6-3
Wittenberg took the third set as neither team held more than a three-point lead. The guests scored the first three points of the fourth set and led 7-1 before DePauw rattled off four straight. A 12-2 run for Wittenberg put the match out of reach. Wittenberg hit .429 in the final set with just one attack error.
Nicole Burge paced DePauw with 12 kills, while Elisabeth Wilson added 11 and Haley Bitzer 10. Bitzer hit .421 for the match. Faith Rolwes assisted on 40 of the Tigers' 54 kills, while Keely McGrath had 23 digs and Rachael Lenderman 18. Rolwes totaled five blocks and Bitzer chipped in four.
Kara Seidenstricker led Wittenberg with 15 kills with Karen Wildemann assisting on 23 of the team's 47 kills. Kristina Fultz totlaed 27 diges with Kendall Farmer and Kennedey Schmidt each totaling four blocks.
DePauw hit .134 for the match to Wittenberg's .168.
DePauw travels to Bloomington, Ill., to compete in the Barker Chevrolet Volleyball Classic IV on Friday and Saturday.
