Elmhurst, Ill. – After a 13-year drought the 25th-ranked DePauw volleyball team returned to the NCAA Division III Championship Thursday afternoon against first round opponent Otterbein University at the Elmhurst College Regional.
The Tigers battled in a hard fought match, but ultimately fell to #18 Otterbein in straight sets 25-21, 25-15, 25-23. DePauw dropped to 26-7 to finish out their season, while the Cardinals improved to 27-7 and will play #2 Hope College in second round action.
After a back and forth battle Otterbein scored five straight points late in the first set to take a 1-0 lead on the Tigers. The Cardinals used 21 kills to grab the momentum.
Set two was dominated by Otterbein who never trailed and used four service aces to win the set.
DePauw jumped out to an early 11-6 lead in the third set before Otterbein battled back and retook the lead 18-17. The Cardinals were able to hold on and close out the third set thus ending the Tigers' season.
The loss spells the end of the Tigers' 2013 campaign where they finished 6-2 in North Coast Athletic Conference play and tied for second in the regular season standings. DePauw grabbed third-place in the NCAC tournament before earning an at-large bid to the 2013 NCAA Championship, their first appearance since 2000.
